I believe the issue people have is that they are not pulling back on the release flange properly when inserting the wheel, so it does not go fully 'home', though it can feel like it.
Yep, this is correct. You have to make sure it is fully seated in

It is not possible to get the wheel even a couple of millimeters on if the wheel is not 'clocked' correctly to the steering shaft. Have just been out in the garage and had a go at fitting and removing the wheel.
When the splines are perfectly lined up it slides on beautifully all the way, when not lined up and i push the wheel on it goes on enough for the wheel to stay on and needs a good pull to get it off, it would be possible to drive the car in this state but obviously not safe to do so!
Because of this i have to make sure the steering lock is on before i remove the wheel so that i know exactly the position to have the wheel when reinstalling.
Theres no positive feel to the splines being lined up when rotating the wheel so have to make sure its lined up before attempting to push it on, maybe mine is slightly damaged? Its been the same from new.

If mine looked like the one above which is how I would expect it to I would agree with you. There are problems with these hubs. Let me just say this is a brilliant machine so far (1200 miles), but this quick release hub is not part of that mix. My hub had issues from day one and I had it addressed a few hundred miles ago as a warranty claim. MMC needs to find a better supplier for that part.

Its easy to get the correct orientation on my car to refit the wheel. The stitched seam on the rim aligns with the double width spline.
The splines in Obie's photo look worn & very dry.

Meanwhile I can confirm that the Portuguese car "litle bastard" crashed because the steering wheel came off. Be careful all of you m3w owners and be thorough with your "pre-flight" checks.

The splines in Obie's photo look worn & very dry. I wiped the grease off to take the picture but admit the splines don’t look great, the car is nearly new and the wheel hasn’t been off that many times, tend to leave it on due to the refitting problems. It’s made by Traven Technology.

It seems like new news that there are two variants of column … one with 14 splines and a nice double width one to provide positive location...the other with 21 narrower splines perhaps requiring more care to avoid having the wheel incompletely engaged. Is this the case? How prevalent is the 21 spline variant?
