On my Roadster the rear offside suspension hanger failed last year in Italy and was welded up.



It has just gone again after c 10k miles!

So I had Krazy Horse order me a new one. You can see how much beefier this is and how MMC have bent the plate to resist the torsional forces.


When it fails you still have damping form one side and the shock absorber rests on the chassis rail & exhaust so at first it isn't so obvious.. In my case on sharp right handers or bouncy roads I could then hear something touching.

If both were to fail I guess it could be more serious.
My advice would be to check both sides. It is obvious in the case of total failure as shock floats free of the brake drum but as it goes it tears along the bolt holes.

Graham when you are next at the factory can you let me know if the passenger side also has this upgrade or if the plate is flat. if upgraded I am tempted to replace that side also.

I have had one fail in exactly the same spot on my +8 John.

It was found at a service , but goodness knows how long it had been in that state. It is far from obvious when looking from above through the luggage shelf access panel.

From memory it was on the passenger side though.

Had one fail on the previous Roadster, thankfully Dave W helped out with a used one for a quick fix, eventually I replaced both with the beefed up version, with the brake drum off it's quite easy

They don't take a huge load it's just the shocker, but they fracture across the hole as it's the weak point as per John V6's photos

do you have to take of the brake shoes or can you get at the nuts with the shoes in place?

They seem to last a bit longer ith stock useless shock absorbers. I would recommend everyone to replace them at the annual service.
I managed to replace mine with the brake shoes in place just undoing the clamps holding them to the shield. The idea of undoing the clamps an all the springs was not tempting.

Might the failure be symptomatic of an unconstrained rear suspension allowing the damper to bottom out? Perhaps exasperated with the extra load when traveling with luggage?

I think it is (again) a flawed design. The new model shown by John V6, seems more robust. In any “normal” car this would be a recall... but we morganeers, get it proactively replaced in the next service at our own cost. We must just love our cars.

Broke one on my plus 8 too, just a crashing noise at the rear offside.
Not an uncommon failure apparently....

Passenger side bracket now on order. The other one might be fine but I decided to upgrade fully & will also fit some of Roger's bump stops.

Mine failed in Kent the year the Mog was there, and I didn't know until we got home.

Access is OK without removing the shoes.
