Hello,

I have been upgrading my headlights to full led - blackout style to include the indicator (removing the standard pods which suffer with heat).
early 2012 car

Whilst making the connections I accidentally allowed a couple of wires to touch, whilst the ignition & indicator were on - my stupid mistake - again.

Everything worked correctly following a temporary wire up (just to check) prior to making more permanent connections & subsequent mistake

The push in 3 pin led flasher relay (red) blew - I have since sourced and fitted a replacement.

With the new relay fitted, the rhs indicators work fine, the hazards work fine, however when you signal left - all the indicators flash, the dash light signals hazards?

Following research on TM I decided that the Indicator module was probably the culprit - ordered and fitted a new one - no change
Thought a bit more - ordered & fitted a new column stalk - still no change/improvement.

Have been to MMC today - asked if they have a detailed wiring diagram I could buy - regret they don't.

Does anybody have any other ideas/suggestions??

It does appear that there are no detailed wiring diagrams available for the M3W, the same situation with the maintenance manuals. It does make you wonder just how the dealers manage to do any work on these cars without this basic information. I have only ever seen some information leaflets for various tasks on the M3W and if these manuals do exist I find it difficult to believe that at least some of the information would not find it's way into, "the wrong hands". Maybe MMC have a better security system than most governments? Nice to think that they may excel at something.

Sorry this doesn't help you ajsms999. Check the wire loom for chaffed insulation, it is very prone to this and disturbing the wires may have shorted something. I recently found broken wires under the sleeving at the boot lid hinge for the rear sidelights that were intermittently shorting and blowing the fuse.

Hopefully the new owners spank the old guard Management System thoroughly and turns the company into a real business that cares for its clientele.

Have you changed the TSM/headlamp unit? It's the one with the 18 way connector. There is also a 20 way instrument panel connector. Both are associated with the green/white (r/h) and green/red (l/h) cables feeding indicators.

Thanks planenut - I will have a close look at the wiring/insulation - although I still get the problem if I disconnect the front indicators at the joint back from the headlight pods - these are the only wires/part of the loo I have touched

Richard - I have replaced the TSM module - no change
Have an electrician coming over tomorrow in an attempt to locate where it’s going wrong - if he can’t find it I may elect to take it back to Malvern & leave it to them to sort out - I worry that this will probably be very expensive.

Will advise how it goes - fingers crossed

At last we found (& fixed) the problem!!

Richard you were very close with your suggestion. Approx 3 or 4 inches away from the the 20 pin dash loom connector (white) there are 2 diodes soldered & heat-shrinked in line, one into the green/red cable (lhs indicator signal) and the other into the green/white (rhs indicator signal).

The lhs (green/red) one had blown. This meant that when I signalled to go left the circuit was 'back feeding' the other side as well. The diodes act as a sort of non return valve in the electricity circuit. New diode spliced in, problem fixed.

I've just got to put it all back together again now.

In searching for the root of my problem, I have noticed something that seems a little strange (to me anyway). If I turn on the hazard lights, without the ignition switched the dash indicators (green arrows) flash but also the red ignition symbols light (as if the ignition had been switched to start point). The car is not ready to start because the fuel pump has not been primed - doesn't start, I've tried.
Never noticed this before - have to say I've never looked really, does anyone else see this - or is it an anomaly with my early car?

A good bit of diagnosis to find that problem Andrew. I never even knew there were diodes fitted there, worth remembering. How a good circuit diagram would have helped........
