Issue - when releasing the clutch, there is a loud creak from the bellhousing area. Depressing the clutch does not produce the creak - it's only on release. The creak on release is the same whether the car is being driven, or with the engine off.

The clutch works normally, bites in the right place, doesn't slip, and there is no loss of fluid. Before my ownership, the car had a new clutch master cylinder. The slave cylinder is firmly attached to the bellhousing. Before I put my head under the bonnet, I had assumed that the creak was from the clutch pedal pivot/linkage, but I've now eliminated that as the source.

Before going to the trouble of doing an engine out job, I'd thought I'd ask if anybody has had a similar problem, and if/how they resolved it.

It's not the return spring on the pedal box is it? Mine made a creaking/clicking noise until I applied a little spray grease.

I have the same problem with my ‘96 Plus 8 so hope that someone can help.

I would certainly spray your suitable lubricant of choice all over the place before anything drastic like engine out!

Thanks for the replies, all - I have indeed sprayed lubricant everywhere, and profusely, and was both surprised and disappointed that it wasn't the answer. Bottom line is that the noise is definitely coming from the bellhousing area....into which I have resisted squirting anything, though the temptation was there
