Hi everyone, I have a 1996 4/4 and I'm thinking of covering the little black plastic steering column cowl with leather. I have removed steering wheel boss and I'm attempting to remove cowl screws. Does anyone know if after getting the screws out does the cowl come out or is it a case of removing dash aswell. Many thank paul.

It just comes off though it is tightly clipped together so careful prising is required.

The cowl on a 1996 car is one piece not 2 piece and it attaches to the dash from behind by 2 screws. I took the dash off to fit a stainless version from Hearts of England. To take of the dash disconnect the power then remove the screws. There is one screw either side plus one or two under the dash padding in the middle of the dash. Have a towel to lay the dash on so it doesn't scratch.
The split cowl comes for the long door cars (late 97 on). This is my short door +4

The later version.....^^^ is from a Land Rover.....from memory a Discovery and is a two piece. With clips and screws.

It changed again, because by 2012 it became the open fronted "home made looking" two piece cowl which is still in use.

True Dave & that latest one I really don't like.

The factory did once say that they were hoping to tool up a better quality column shroud, but the cost was astronomical. I seems that this never made it!

I have been toying with the idea of making a one in fibreglass and Jays sent me a spare cowl to use as a model. My idea is to leave most of it as is but reduce the opening to a round hole that only just clears the back of the centre hub of the steering wheel. It would then be covered to match the trim of the car. In order to do this the only thing that I can think to do this is to take a plaster cast of the inside of the cowling and then re-sharp the section that I want to change. For a one off I could then use that as a male mould. Alternatively I could then use a coating of thicknessing wax (if I can find it) and make a female mould.

One way or another I must get off my backside and decide what I want to do.

At 7th of September I have a appointment with a very good saddler. He will execute the most minimal version in leather at my steering wheel cover. Pictures will follow.
