The Borsalino (summer) is nice! My favorite design would be a aviator's style leather cap w/visor and goggles (per Graham, see above), since I don't plan on landing upside down. (I know, but who ever does???)

Steve, I didnt go thru this thread in all its meandering entirety but regarding motorcycle rules in California, I am guessing that if it is registered as a M/C--which it better be for smog reasons!--then all M/C rules probably apply, including DOT helmet class and quite probably a full-on class C M/C license. Although of course any given patrolman might or might not know what to do. But in my experience, I predict they will trail and pull over the first m3w they see, just to take a look at it. I would assume class C license until proven otherwise.
If you only drive surface streets in daylight, might be able to get away with a m/c permit which doesn't need driving test. At least that's how it used to be.

To find documentation that trikes can be driven in California with nothing but a standard Class C license, you'll find multiple (unanimous) sources online – google "California trike driver's license" or "California trike 'Class C' license".

Per eHow.com, California trike operators and passengers are exempted from wearing helmets: the California Vehicle Code Section 27803 states that drivers and passengers riding in trikes that are fully enclosed, not less than seven feet long and four feet wide and weigh 900 pounds or more are exempt from the wearing of helmets.

Those traditional goggles are just too cumbersome.

I'd go for Davida's aviator goggles Retro yet looks good IMO



For those who wears prescription glasses(I do), you could also buy one with prescription lenses fitted inside



Lastly, those who don't want to carry their helmet around, but does occasional motorway stint, I'd recommend Save Phace , probably looks slightly weired whilst driving a traditional 3W, but its light weight and takes up hardly any space...There are other more discreet designs...

I have those goggles and they are fantastic! Look great and good quality lenses. I heartily recommend them.

That face protection is actually a great idea as your right the helmet isn't really there to protect in the case of a roll over (although nice to have) but to protect from road debris becoming missiles! I know at least one 3W potential owner who will like the flames (eh Asbo )
