Tried to....

Flat battery.

It seems my Optimate has given up the ghost. So down to Halfords for a new charger.
Battery now on charge, but worryingly the battery condition indicator on the top of the battery says "replace".
The battery was new in April 2019!
Not a happy bunny.
To say the least....

Bad luck Peter, you must have a guarantee I've got a 3 year one on my last Morgan one it was a wet cell mind you so more reliable in my experience.

I'd be disappointed if I had less than six years on a modern battery.

I got 13 years on my Roadster battery, and the same on our old Polo.

A quick hour and a half drive to get to the 15mins away airport to pick up the missus from her couple of days in london...
Still 20°c at 8.30pm... rather pleasant while listening to a rugby WC podcast...

have you replaced the Optimate with another 'trickle' type charger ,e.g. a CTEK or similar?

If so, you may find that you need a good.old fashioned charger to get some initial charge into the battery after which the CTEK will then work OK.

I have had this where the CTEK says the battery is finished but the above method has worked.

Sadly,I have also had the situation where a perfectly good CTEK has 'fried' a perfectly good Odyssey battery just by being on too long and at too low a charge......

Good luck......

James

I bought a "Ring" brand smart charger: it initially suggested the battery was only 30% charged.
Left it on overnight, it staggered up to 75%. The condition indicator said charge...
Took it down to Halfords, they did a quick test and agreed to replace it.
The technician said that it probably had a failed cell.
I have to say that George at Salisbury Halfords was excellent, helping me chose the best matched charger and then today sorting out the exchange.

The new charger can be used as a trickle charger, he suggested connecting it for a couple of days a week, and not leaving it on all the time.

The Plus6 was really fast ( obviously ) and it steered well and soaked up bumps - however whilst I like Autos I didn't warm to a slush box in a Morgan and given the car is "all new" I was surprised that lots of Morgan rattles are still built in. Still felt really good however and if I win the lottery I'd have one. However would I swap my tuned and fettled 4/4 for one? No. Really good to try one however - thanks Phil @ Allon white.

I haven't driven the +6 yet but I have been slowly been building up a close relationship with my Plus 4 which I think means a lot in ownership terms. Probably wouldn't buy a +6 as it's just too expensive and has more power than I need but I was thinking that I might be sorely tempted by a lightweight, smaller engined, "new" +4 or 4/4 with a manual gearbox.

I think you are absolutely right on this. Morgans are cars that repay long-term ownership in a way that modern kit just cannot do.

I'm not a horse person, but the Morgan experience of taking care of things, plus the smell of leather creates a bond which must be similar to what you get with a horse.
