If you check you will probably find the other side with it's rubber still in place. personally I have overcome the problem by leaving the plastic nonsense under the bench in the workshop and fitted the fan in the "radiator " grille in the front of the bonnet where it can pull air through from below the car and cool the oil tank a bit as well.

Sounds like a good idea, do you have photos of that Mod?

Have just updated my site with photos see here :- http://www.bleazey.co.uk/M3W.html#fan

Phil, is it pulling air from the engine or pushing it toward the engine? Have you noticed and change in oil temperature with the fan like that?

Hi Lightspeed, the fan pushes the air forward like the original - it is only used in slow moving traffic or at a standstill so no conflict of airflows. I don't have automatic temperature controlled switching but if I leave it switched on then the airflow from forward motion will overcome the fan airflow and this gives some automatic aerodynamic compensation. Not sure about having the fan pushed round backwards while still switched on though. Would it work like a dynamo and help to recharge the battery or is that wishing for a benefit too far perhaps?

Sorry Lightspeed, forgot to mention the temperature issue. I have installed an oil temperature gauge By SW but it reads double the actual temperature so it is difficult to give a precise answer till I get it sorted. I can, however, say that the engine runs significantly cooler when the fan is in use.
