I want to fit an electric fan to my 4/4 1600.

Preferred option is 'engine side' of the radiator, so will measure and find something suitable of a suitable size.

Any suggestions for mounting? I don't like those 'pull though' ties that go through the radiator. Anyone done something different?

Cheers

Phil

Thank you - unfortunately those are the 'pull through' type I want to avoid (I've used them before on old Land Rovers and had leaks appear over time).

Phil, I have no idea of the layout of your 4/4... On my +8 the fan is supported on the top cross head bar by a couple of saddles gripped round the bar and spacers utilised to mount the fan in the desired position.

Sounds a good option - how was it fixed at the bottom? Thinking I could tie in with the bottom radiator mounts.

Can you get access to a CVH engined car to take a look?
Out 1985 car (sold on in Dec-13) had an electric fan mounted on the engine side of the radiator. Sadly I cannot remember how it was mounted. Definitely not the ‘pull through’ fixing.

I think the later ones had the mountings built in to the radiator itself.

No "bottom" fixings required, on my mid 80`s +8 the centre of the fan is centred with the cross bar. The assembly is no more than an electric motor and a fan, no shrouding framework. The motor has fixing points in it`s casing.

Perhaps fan technological advance had to take elf`n safety into account and thus required the blades to be shrouded to some degree... dunno..!

I appreciate that the normal mindset is to utilise the fixings on the shrouding to mount the whole assembly though perhaps it might be worth thinking out of the box...? Looking at the second pic recently posted by Keith of his 4/4 four seater restoration project, it seems his has the original system, the fan being directly mounted to the water pump, thus no additional electrics involved..?

I have a 1600 engine in my 64 4/4 and the space engine side of the radiator is very tight to fit a powerful enough electric fan. I have a push fan infront of the radiator and have never had any issues with not keeping the workings cool, even in our 90-100F days going over mountain passes and in stationary traffic.

Had a Kenlowe mounted ahead of the rad on my '76 4/4. Not really enough room behind.
Mounted on the standard (back then) Kenlowe mounting bars, not through rad.
