Not at all keen on Rolex, they are like Porsche's, everyone has one. If you really want a vintage then the place to go is the Burlington Arcade off Piccadilly. There you can buy a watch to match your birthday but every jeweller has at least a couple for sale.
Be a bit daring and go for something a little unusual from an independent company of which there are many. such as Garrick. I had my Morgan watch made by them and, as such, it is the only one in the world!! Very interesting and a modern design. I did not know Pierre de Roche. it reminds me a little of Ulysse NardinHeinz, they are things of beauty but even I wouldn't spend that much on a watch especially as I need my reading glasses on to see the time. The only watch I have that I can read easily is the Panerai Luminor Marina although the Jaguar Bremont comes close.

In a fit of derangement 16 years ago, I bought this watch. I don't wear it often but I still like it a lot. Maybe not for every day...so much of blue. It is a small entry-level model but it beautifully embodies the playfulness of the brand. It's 40mm what I like. Today the smallest UL is 43mm, many are 44mm. I'm finding this thread fascinating although I really don't 'get it' with regard for expensive watches. The most I've ever paid for a watch is £50 (and I baulked at that), and that's because it tells the time and also tracks step count, heart rate, sleep patterns etc. so I thought it quite useful.

TBM that's the same as telling your wife, honey, why the mink coat? The neoprene jacket is just as warm...

Another great brand which are a little under the radar are Sinn. They are doing some really great pieces. I had one of their U1's. Built like a tank, well a submarine actually as the case is made from German submarine metal !! Sinn
