I am surprised that there is no legislation concerning this. It seems logical that it must be more harmful to blow exhust gasses directly onto the pavement especially in stationary traffic lights and crossings.

As far as I'm aware, there's no issues as long as it meets usual safety/emissions regs. There are several current make/models out there that have side exits on either both sides or just on the passenger side.

my 97 plus 8 has side exhausts. don’t know if original - came to me in 2013. it looks pretty funny on a cold morning -‘ steam’coming out both sides. prefer the look of two pipes at the back but on the other hand less risk of grounding out on an incline. don’t notice any unwanted noise.

My Plus 4 has side exhaust outlet on the offside. Lovely burble on the over-run and no ear ache issues after 200 motorway miles. Can raise an interesting dust cloud on some car parks in Summer. Would certainly not swop for rear outlet arrangement.

My Plus 8 has the Librands Sports dual exhausts on it out the back and they are just right for me and quite loud they produce a wonderful noise on overrun at 1,500rpm. I think the side exits might be a bit too much for me on a longer run.

My 1969 4/4 has a standard manifold with a side exit exhaust and sounds great. I love the throaty sound it makes on acceleration and find it quiet enough when cruising. Why would anyone wont a quiet sports car ? No complaints from my passengers either......I can’t hear them ..
