Back in my rugby days there was a culture of train, play, drink. Less so with the cricket.
The social side was the big influence and everyone just joined in.
Since those days I have greatly reduced alcohol consumption and drifted towards less but more enjoyment. I am more selective with the beers/lagers/wine/spirits these days as part of dietary improvements.
At golf we usually drink coffee/tea with “tots” when someone brings a bottle in on their birthday. A tradition that has built up.
I developed gout when in my 40’s and changed diet to help keep it at bay. Very painful and it occurred in the big toe joint on one foot only.The alternative was daily alopurinol tablets to knock back the uric acid. I declined and doc agreed that managing diet was a good first option. I moved to reduced purine containing foods ( occasional treats maintained though). Drank more water, drank cherry juice daily as it was thought to help. It did in my case as when I stopped it the gout started back. Now I don’t drink it as over time things have stabilised.
I do enjoy a glass of wine some evenings or a glass of my favourite single malts.
It is easy when out and about to be alcohol free as the driving helps focus on non alcohol. Mind you the fizzy coke drinks are not always the best. I have us3d Pepsi to clean the cast exhaust manifold. I don’t like the alcohol free beers. Orange/ blackcurrant/ lemonade and lime etc are better.
I walk a lt with golf ( a round is over 4 miles) and the dog. Having moved house 2 years ago walking into town is easier than driving ( no parking to sort out).
I am toying with using the gym at the golf club too. The cycling machines especially as next spring I might buy a bicycle to utilise the good cycling routes we have.

One beer during lunch, one glass of red wine (occasionally two) during dinner. No probs so far but you never know. Peter I wish your wife a speedy and full recovery!

Day 9...

Made a cocktail with alcohol free gin and alcohol free triple sec, plus lemon juice, otherwise known as a white lady. Alcohol free it is called a naked lady.
Very dissapointing.

So after supper I poured myself a small malt yesterday evening to drink with decaffeinated coffee.
Didn't really enjoy it.

Tea is good...
San Miguel Alcohol Free beer is good.
Water is good.

I think I'm on the way to "I can't be bothered to drink alcohol".
My son has offered us cannabis brownies...
Hmm...

I am not sure about these stats as being specifically related to causation. For example if a drunk steps in front of bus and is killed, is that recorded as a road accident or alcohol induced?

Does the ingestion of ethyl aclohol have any health benefits? No evidence to support this trope but plenty of support by the drink industry. They are trying to sell the stuff after all.

Cannabis these days isn't what it was in the 70's or the 80's. Tried some in Amsterdam couple of years ago, totally off my head.

I agree with twotribes and fatwolfie.
Getting unbiased data and end results takes care. It is easy to introduce bias either deliberately or accidentally.
Whoever produces the stats is important too as they can conduct trials with built in bias.
Collecting unbiased data is step 1.
Step 2 is getting correlation to show links/cause and effect is also open to errors. There can be too many influences that need to be eliminated or they must feature equally in the comparisons made.
It is worries about lack of correct data and poor comparison that makes me suspicious, especially when politicians are involved. Diesel was good at one time and promoted by politicians for better mpg and CO2 , ignoring NOx at that time. Now the NOx has reared its head reversing earlier decisions.

As a former lab rat and with 40 years in the analytical sciences sector, involving clinical and pharmaceutical industries, I agree 100%.
A good statistician once said to me " tell me the conclusion you want and I'll find the data to prove it" He was joking...I think!

Peter, I have seen that many times in business. Facts being ignored to ensure the desired result. Then the whole thing being reversed when reality hits.
