So here's a challenge - recommend me fun, open top, sporty car that costs less than £150 a year to tax and under £4000 to buy.
Gary
Easy. A Smart Roadster. SWMBO has had one for 12 years now. Totally reliable, does near 50 mpg, corners like a go cart and tax is £120pa. Only minus s the gearbox which is an early automated manual box. Works OK but changes are way slower than a modern DSG. Its a sort of modern Healey Sprite.

How about a 2cv? That is fun to drive and comfy at the same time...

Not allowed a motor bike as I fell off the last one I owned and SWMBO had one crash into her.
Bobs MX5 looks nice enough but they're very common and his is a long way away
Had a Morris Minor and would consider a soft top version, a Tractor would be fun - sort of. My friend has a tractor museum in his shed! Its a big shed and contains about 30 tractors, some of which are eye wateringly valuable.
Pulled a 2CV out of someones garden a few years ago - got it running and sold it on. Far too odd for me.
Smart Roadster - off to look on ebay........

How about a Series 2 or 2a Land Rover. With a tilt you have open top motoring or with flies in your teeth if you fold windscreen down. Outstandingly easy to rebuild. Great opportunity of perfecting the double de-clutch with the luxury of syncro on third and fourth ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/VZpLq1E.jpg) Tax free motoring and can be made to work for its keep

That is a lovely thing, but, for something in that sort of condition you would possibly need to put a 1 in front of the £4k budget

sounds like the stag fits the bill perfectly, why not keep it if it is a good one instead of taking on a newcomer which could be more trouble than its worth?? Merry xmas everyone, cheers, Ian

I think the smart roadster is an idea. But what about a MK2 Toyota MR2 T bar? Ie 1992-1999. Ok tax will be just over £200 but its a great car to drive, reliable and if you choose well , a safe place to put £4000 that may well go up in value. - for which you'll find a good one. An example -

It's crazy how the look on cars can change. I always thought the MX5 NA was the nicer car, but now I like the NB a lot in its own way. So,I like Bob’s car a lot. From the NB there are still real bargains from first owners in this country with good care and garage from 2.000€ on as I recently saw in advertisements.
