There is some pretty tough vinyl and it can look good as well. I wrapped my heat shields in faux carbon fiber vinyl and it is holding up fine in that rather abusive location.

Fairly sure it is real wood but only a thin veener, glued and vacuum bagged to conform to the curves, that is how MMC make the dashes on other cars.

I installed an
engine turned full dash in my M3W. Added to the vintage look. Gets tons of attention and is truly the missing piece. I hated the brushed aluminum instrument piece.
