Hi everyone,

I have two things I wonder a bit about on my car. it is a -98 +8 (4,6L engine). I wolud like to have your thinking on these matters.

1:
The cooling fan of the car in temperature controlled. Under a certain temperature the fan stops. No problem there. But it would be nice to be able to turn it on manually. Sometimes it feels like it turns on a bit late. The picture here below shows a bit of the car.
The temperature sensor is located in the radiator, left side of picture. Behind the Photobucket watermark. I guess that the fan starts when there is contact between the two cables. I am thinking about a way to have a manual control also. Any suggestions on the easiest way to accomplish this?

2:
The battery is located rear of the seats, next to the rear axle. How do you get it out? Do you have to do that from below?

Best Regards

A single pole switch wired across (parallel) the radiator temperature sensor will over ride this function when you feel it necessary, be sure to add an inline fuse though. overide switch

The battery comes out from the top once you remove the saddle board.

Hello Bjorn

Good chance that the wire from the temperature sensor, if it's switching the fan, is an earth that goes to a terminal on a relay. Ideally you need to find this relay then add an additional wire to the same terminal and then through a separate switch to an earth. Send me a pm if you want to discuss further.

Cheers

Philip

On #1 go to GOMOG.com

#2 is a problem. I would suggest removing the seats and removing the plywood divider and scoot the battery into the seat well. b. Or drop out the bottom.

It should come out the top. Can be difficult to grip, but can be done.

Since I fitted a mulberry aluminium radiator to my 98 4.6 plus 8 I’ve had no issues.
The fan kicks in when necessary, I don’t feel the need to install a manual override switch.
But I guess each to their own

My 97 +4 had an ali plate behind the passenger seat. Remove that and the battery comes out that way. On my 94 4/4 I had to jack up the car & lower it out.

I have just fitted an over-ride fan switch to my 1999 +8 , so can show you what I have done. I can't claim any credit for this , my good friend Colin (Spanner Juggler on here) gave me all the design and details I needed.

1 Fit 2 "piggy-back" connectors to the temperature switch.
I appreciate you won't have Halfords in Sweden , but these must be available locally somewhere.

https://www.halfords.com/workshop-t...-connectors-15-amp-semi-insulated-hef383

2 Connect 2 cables (15 amp is more than sufficient , you are only carrying the signal voltage which is low current) which are long enough to go from the switch to the dashboard and have some spare just in case. I covered these in electrical trunking to match others in the engine bay and ran them under the intake manifold and plenum assembly through one of the existing bulkhead grommets.

3 Now the decision is how to rig up a switch , the GoMog site recommends a separate switch under the dash but easily accessible. As I don't have any auxiliary spot lights fitted I was able to use the spot light switch. I just disconnected the existing wiring , taped it up, and connected my 2 wires to the same switch.

Let me know if this is not clear and I will endeavour to send you some photos of the finished work.

Once again thanks to Colin for helping me through this project. It is well worthwhile as it enables me to switch on the fan before I come to rest so that I can reduce the temperature , and prevent the normal heat soak that occurs as the engine cools.

Good luck

I have a 2002 Plus8 .
It does not overheat but the fan does come on and is clearly heard.
Aluminium radiator ( maybe Morgan original as no details of changes in the car’s history file).
The fan kicks in at 95 on the temperature gauge. It has the temp sensor switch in the top tank, left side.
In summer the car runs at 85-90 deg so the fan can cut in when in slow traffic/ on stop as airflow is gone.
In winter she is currently running at about 80 deg and fan rarely cuts in ( needs longer on stop to get hotter). Last autumn I fitted bonnet extenders to open the rear of the bonnet to help air escape and theoretically improve airflow. This appears to have reduced coolant temp by a couple of degrees to just below the previous temp. I am hoping summer temps will improve as well.
I am considering fitting airscoop/ducting to improve airflow further but space is at a premium. Looking at ideas at the moment.

I’ve only just bought my 4.6 but nice it rubs nice and cool but almost immediately after I stop in traffic it climbs quickly and fans are on constantly.

God knows what will happen in the summer
