First thanks for the excellent information on the “Replacing Seat Belt on a 2007 +4” (or similar title) it was a great help. Turned out on my 2009 +4 that the bolt and nut are both 17mm although I didn’t discover that until it was out before that it had looked like the bolt was 18mm, even with modified spanners and a helpful neighbour with hands like a gynaecologist stopping the bolt from turning was a nightmare, we eventually stopped it turning by getting a large screwdriver in between the seatbelt base and mounting bracket from the bulkhead side and “lifting” the seatbelt to put pressure on the bolt to stop it turning, once removed it could be seen that the nut was Loctite’d on.

I would greatly appreciate any advice and recommendations on where to send the belt for refurbishment, thanks

Hi bmgermany. I don't know how to search for my previous posts, but this is how I fixed both of my weak retracting seat belts. Remove just the reel from the chassis and sit with it on your lap in the car. Because reels differ, you need to identify which end cap work on. Press each of the plastic end caps to your ear in turn, and listen for the one that 'ratchets' when your pull the belt out and back. You DON'T touch this one.
The other cap should have 3 plastic pins which retain quartered plastic fixings which hold the cap onto the metal frame. Carefully push the pin partially back to release the quartered fixing and allow the cap to be prised from the frame. BE VERY CAREFUL TO ONLY JUST RELEASE THE CAP, if you let it go, the recoil spring could fly out ! Please watch youtube - 'Rewinding a Seat Belt Return Spring and What NOT To Do' !!
Now, VERY carefully and maintaining a constant pressure motion, turn the cap anti-clockwise (in my case 3 turns) and pop the cap back on. Push the pins back in to secure. It's quite simple with care and patience. That worked for me, but if the retract is still weak, I imagine a few more turn might work ?

FDTS for sure - mine went there this morning. My bolt was 17mm and the nut 18. I managed to get the bolt head held in place with a double-ended cranked spanner that I'd bought as a set some year ago They'd lain unused until now. The stubby wouldn't go over the bolt head and neither would the long ratchet spanner. The 18mm one worked fine on the nut.

I talked to them this morning and the belt is now boxed up ready to go off tomorrow, I ordered a stubby ratchet spanner as Roady so hopefully that will work on the tightening up.

I had a word with them re "weak springs", they did say it's possible but really depends on the condition of the springs, to be honest the difficulty and awkwardness of removing the belt I would live with the poor retraction rather than the hassle of removal, I had considered taking both belts off and getting them rewebbed in a dark brown but the trouble I had getting one out made me rethink that option.

As a footnote I would just like to say that the service from FDTS Ltd has been excellent I posted the belt off on Tuesday and it has been returned to me today, Thursday, which gives virtually a 48 hour turn around. 1st class service from Sue and her team.

I will have a Look about the difference between my 4/4 with spare wheel and a +4!

The problems we have are also a safety problem!
