I use a bungee cord hooked to one of the sprung "plungers" then over the top and hooked to a windscreen wiper spindle

Being an old bikey I always carry a few bungee cords.

My hood would flop rearwards big time in the event of the strut being displaced.

Because of this the strut is actually under a fair bit of compressive load while supporting the hood. Granted, a latch would resist tension but in this situation unless there was a very strong wind blowing from back to front resistance to tension is not required. There is some potential for the strut to slip sideways if nudged, but the thickness of both the strut and it’s locating peg together with the fixing bolt anchorage contribute to reasonable lateral stiffness of the assembly.

No issues in the 6 months that I have had this device on board 😊

When in doubt - get the bungee out !! 👍

Thanks for the explanation. The photo mislead me into thinking the hood was virtually vertical, but as you say with a reasonable compressive load, it should be sturdy.

I use a more “Heath Robinson” method — a length of bamboo with rubber ferrules on each end - one end into the receiver hole of the hood latch pins and the other onto the rear of the hood - holds the rear of the hood up when required and costs pennies with no metal work skills whatever needed!!!

Hi Chris no need to send the plans, I spent a happy arvo in the shed and it’s done.

Geese I wish I had invented that. I just had some parts Laser cut for my Elfin Clubman and the price was so cheap. If it was my design I would shoot in a get a quote for a few to be made and make a little pocket money 😂

You should do that Chris all you need for a kit is the two components, two new bolts, two nylon washers to space out the swinging bar and 5 mins counter sinking the two holes. Like all the best ideas it is such a simple solution.
