I have a 1980 Morgan which started out life as a 4/4 with a 1600 crossflow Ford engine with 4-speed gearbox. When I acquired it the car had been fitted with an early 1980's Fiat 2 litre twin cam engine (with carburettor rather than the Morgan fitment of fuel injection) with it's 5-speed box.
So, my question is, can I call it a +4?
Is the car dimensionally the same as a +4 of that era? Are there any other factors that distinguish a +4 from a 4/4?

I’d just call it a 4/4 2 litre!

I assume it would continue to be referred to as a 4/4, albeit it's increase in engine displacement. [img] [/img]

I suspect you can call it any name you want...Les (-:
However I suspect it`s chassis number will have been recorded initially by the MMC and identified by them as a 4/4, and the DVLA will perhaps have that chassis number registered as 4/4 also...? Assuming both the MMC and DVLA have your Morgan registered as a 4/4, then you may introduce a level of complication by calling it by another Morgan related identity...?
In terms of DVLA requirements I suspect the current engine numbers are recorded in the "log book" (V5) which if not, could also create issues in any future claim if your insurance company are not aware of the engine change...?
Perhaps best to keep it simple..?

If it was built as a 4/4 it’s a 4/4, but now has an extension 4/4 Bitsa. I would be proud to call it a 4/4 the original 4 wheel moggy

A number of the 4/4 Fiat engined cars were listed as 4/4, regardless of 1600 or 2.0 Fiat powerplants...

It's a 4/4 and be proud of it. The 4/4 or more accurately the 4-4 was the first of the long line of 4 wheelers and it has been improved as have so many Morgans over the years.
I've swapped my old 1800 engine for a 2 litre but I'm proud of the work and I've made my 4/4 even better than it was.
Maybe we should start a 4/4 2 litre club.

A lot of Morgans are shown as 4/4 on the V5 whatever the model.
The most recent block of 2L 4/4s were the 75th Anniversary cars. Then a trickle of narrow bodied Plus 4s to special order.
The narrow Plus4s cost more than the standard Plus4s, so not many were made.
You can't get too prescriptive about this. 😊
