On Andrew Marr's show this morning the Chinese Ambassador claimed the death rate is 2% That's vastly reassuring. There's absolutely no reason why the Chinese would want to underplay the potential impact, and I'm sure it will be nothing like the SARS outbreak where the final death toll at 9% was found to be hugely greater than the original estimate. According to the Times, the Government has responded by declaring Coronavirus a “serious and imminent threat to public health”, allowing the British government to introduce new powers to deal with its spread. People with the infection can be forcibly kept in quarantine if they are considered a threat to public health under the measures announced by Matt Hancock, the health secretary, this morning.

Apparently there was someone in quarantine who was threatening to walk out.... So they made the necessary statement in the right form of words to allow them to legally prevent that.... With so many people's selfish attitudes I could see that coming a mile off.... They should have done it before the planes landed!

I have a great respect for the Chinese people and their skills, resourcefulness and work ethic. I don't have the same level of belief in their open nature as a country when it comes to things like this. If the numbers were as they say I could not see them sanctioning the hospital project in that manner..

I agree the job of the government is to maintain safety, calm and service but this mess and highly variable reporting is not making any of it more understandable.

the government announced new powers to keep people in quarantine to stop the spread of the virus. In order to do this the Department of Health has described the coronavirus as a "serious and imminent threat" to public health"...... I hope that includes people "hawking/spitting" having just walked into town and spotted 3 sputum patches. disgusting habit IMHO.

While we are at it let's ban chewing gum. If you have ever wondered what all those black spots on the road at traffic lights are: they are mainly chewing gum that someone has spat out on the road. Then if you tread on a fresh one you just as likely finish up with it on the carpet of your car or in the house.

The numbers from China are unverified by any third party authority. In science the inability to verify published data means that the information has to be treated with caution. Some other eminent scientists believe that the official figures are understated....this is from a Professor at Imperial College, London. Corona DataHe says that in China no more than 10% of all infected persons are identified, these tend to be those who are the most unwell. As recent UK news has shown, there may be quite a number of people travelling about who are infected, but not showing and symptoms.
