Finally saved up enough wedge to buy the Librands stainless sport manifold. Fairly expenisve but couldn't find an alternative that didn't need a large amount of fabrication. However, thought the corresponding exhaust was extortionate at nigh on £600 with the VAT/P&P.

Bit of a ferret around on eBay and I got a set of stainless components to knock up a 2" side exit for £75. If it's too loud I can get a double length silencer for another £40, or an extra baffle for £7. Forecast is OK for Sunday morning, so will hopefully get it fitted then with some studious application of the chopsaw smile

I just use ebay.

This is a link to someone doing straight stainless in 1 5/8" - Stainless exhaust

It's the same one I used for the straights and the silencer. Delivery was very quick (24hrs) and free.

For bends, I tend to use the search terms 'jetex' and 'mandrel'. You can get them in a range of 'degrees' of bend.

All available in mild steel too.

Once I've got mine a set up properly and happy with the sound level, I'll get some of the main joints 'tigged' and lose the clamps.

I got lots of brownie points of the Mrs last night when I showed the Librands exhaust photo and price and then asked her how much she thought my selection of bits were.

For once she didn't focus on how much I'd spent, but on how much I'd saved. smile smile

There are plenty of custom exhaust manufacturers out there that can make full or partial systems in either mild steel or stainless, some years ago I had a set of rear sections made to replace the end boxes and pipes on an Aero 8, they were amazing and a quarter of the price of the librands system, worth asking around, I'm sure some others on here have done the same and could recommend a manufacturer near to where you live.

Tony Banks Custom Exhausts Tong Road Leeds LS12 4QP 01132798944

Highly recommend this company.

They made up systems for a number of my cars including both Morgans..great skill and good prices

I used a local one in MK to do the exhaust on my car - one of those well advertised franchises. To be honest, the quality of work was shocking. Had to go back three times as a silencer kept ripping it's welds - they said themselves that the quality of steel was poor.

Just before I scrapped the car, I had a look at the system under on a ramp. Welding was terrible, with wire sticking out and was rusting badly after three years, rear silencer had been fixed with a jubilee clip and whereas it was supposed to be a 'cat back' system, it was only the tailpipes they'd done.

As usual - caveat emptor. If you do use one, make sure you check everything carefully on a ramp before handing over the cash. Also make sure that they are actually using a proper 'welder' rather than a bloke who's done a bit of metal gluing.

That said, I have seen some very good results, but you can understand why personally, I now choose to DIY!

The Librands manifold for the Crossflow engined 4/4 is an absolutely fantastic piece of fabrication

What's more it flows really well too, much better than the factory manifold. Out of interest, I cut open the original factory mild steel manifold, and it was horrible inside with great gobs of weld and narrowing inside to disrupt the flow.

I had a complete lifetime guaranteed stainless exhaust system (manifold through to tailpipe) made by a lad near Llangefni on Anglesey for £150 about 5 years ago. Its absolutely fantastic quality and according to noise tests, (on an MSA approved noise meter), each reading has been within 1.5% of the original figure so no deterioration to the packing.

A word of caution though for those considering having a system made for the earlier Mogs esp 3 wheelers. Imperial sized stainless exhaust tubing is getting harder and harder to source!!

Excellent strategy.

Doesn’t work every time but does work often enough to make it worth a go.
