Me too. Trips are planned. But the reality is it is twice as contagious as flu & roughly 20% die from it.. Meanwhile I look at my pension fund and weep as the new Morgan disappears. That is a first world problem compared to the virus. Be thankful we are still for now well. I'm sure the statisticians will be along shortly but I have not seen a death rate as high as 20% although the rate does increase markedly with age so maybe it is 20% in the over 80s or something like that.

I think the 20% figure is way out. Stats I saw earlier today indicated around 82000 confirmed cases worldwide with 2800 deaths.

If the Chinese stats are to be believed fatality rates are in the region of 2.3% which seems quite realistic. Put in context the SARS ran at 9.3% fatality.

So far in Italy the death rate is 2.6% if the figures are to be believed. Almost all, if not all, were people suffering from some severe health problems. On the bright side 45 out of 650 cases have now been declared cured and have been dismissed from hospital or quarantine. I suspect we have so many reported cases only because we are doing a lot of checking. If it was not for all the publicity most people would only think they had a bad flu and treat it at home. Other than the 2 Chinese (now dismissed) at the end of January in Rome the major outbreak was only 2 weeks ago so I think it is fair to say that reasonably young and fit people tend to get over the infection in about 2 weeks and severe cases, or elderly people, may take as much as 4 weeks before they can be considered cured. It is certainly not something to be taken lightly but it is not the end of the world either. My niece, who is at university in England at the moment, just flew from Genoa to London and was astonished that there was not the slightest health check at the airport when she cleared immigration.

At the beginning of May we have booked Rome with a group of friends and at the beginning of June I have booked one week NY with my son. Let us see what will happen until then.

There does seem some coherence between those figures which is reassuring and the articles I have read these fatalities have been among the frail and unfit community sadly. The media seem to be on speed with this outbreak and although it's not to be taken lightly it's not the plague is it and does need to be kept in perspective. That's concerning about your nieces experience coming into the UK from Italy though I would have expected an IR temperature scan as a minimum.

I spoke to a friend in SanFran today and apparently two cases have been identified there and the they have gone crazy.
As mentioned above, with the travel in and out of SFO from Asia and Europe you would have expected some form of check just like LGW and LHR but nothing.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I read an article today about SF Chinatown being boycotted and them suffering financially as a result of the bigotry/fear not sure which or both, a bit sad though.

Our excellent Chinese takeaway was always busy, 12-15 in the queue at weekends for hours, nowadays very quiet, 2-3 queuing at the most. I wonder why....🤔
