Has anyone rebuilt a 70's era 4/4 seat base. Driving back from Williams I could feel the inside edge of the wooden seat frame which seems to be shaped like a doughnut i.e. a wide peripheral frame with the centre section missing. My posterior is fairly narrow (ok maybe too much info!) and I'm hoping replacing the frame with a solid base would be better. Unless there is seat webbing which has slackened off! I'll need to take it apart to find that out though. Anyone been inside one?

Hi thelastgizmo. My 1971 4/4 2 seater has the bench seat and the seat bases are very basic. Consisting of a piece of 5 ply ( bottom sized ) and two pieces of 1" timber screwed and glued to the ply. one at the back and the taller one fits in rearwards of the transverse chassis crossmember. The squab ( cushion ) is held on the ply by some domes. The squab is shaped a bit to accept a bottom. I believe by the sound of things yours does have a metal frame and is not fitted with a bench seat. So the above information is probably of no help. I did rebuild the drivers side to increase the tilt ( I am 6ft 1 1/2" and shrinking!! ) and it did lift my knees up to give a more comfortable position.

Sounds just like the seat bases on my '76 Doug.
Easy lift out and room for a few tools. have a feeling I left a small (cheapo) 1/4" drive socket set under the passenger seat when I sold the car

Doug, What means the word domes in you sentence:
"held on the ply by some domes."
Graham you mean you can lift the seat easily to put a tool box below?

Hi Toucan. A dome I am referring to is similar to what fastens your tonneau cover to the back of the body of the car. The just heard the seat base in position on the plywood base.

Yes, the seat base just lifts out ("bench seat"). I'll see if I have a photoof the seat. Don't have one of the base on its own.
The underside of the seat sits 50mm or so above the floor - so you won't get much of a tool box in the space.

Thanks Graham, l have got separated seats, and l didn't find a way to rock them. Different, definitely.

The "bench seat" supposedly finished in '75, however some later cars were still fitted with them.

Mine's a '74 4/4 with separate seats. I'm not sure if it started out that way however.

I've taken the seat base apart. Tried to add a photo but seems to not be an easy thing to do on here.
