Just noticed some traces of rust on my stainless steel wire wheels at the base of the spokes where the nut is. Factory fitted on 2005 car.
Is this something to be expected (It's a Morgan, Sir they all do that)? What is the best proctective application to apply (ACF50)?

High salt levels will attack stainless. Yes WD40 etc should help reduce it. You can also paint it over when bright with clear varnish

My painted stainless steel wires. Well nearly all the spoke nuts have rusted. Popped the paint off, hence I have used black hamerite to stop the rust. Plainly the nuts are not stainless.

So stainless no longer means what it says , presumably because the quality of these wheels is below the standard required ?

Won an MWS wheel cleaning kit at a raffle recently so tried it out yesterday on front wheels. The cleaning fluid which contains a cocktail of mild acids is brushed on then rinsed off after a few minutes. A diluted protection rinse is then put on and left to dry. I must say they look brilliant now and the slight tarnishing on spokes nearest centre has gone.

Stainless doesn't mean rust free. stainless is particularly sensitive to chloride pin hole corrosion. and all stainless "rusts" when deprived of oxygen - it needs this to allow formation of clear oxide protective layer which is why polished stainless dulls a little afterwards. Noticed the corrosion on marine grade stainless boarding ladder that had shrunk fit plastic protection.

Stainless doesn't mean rust free. stainless is particularly sensitive to chloride pin hole corrosion. That's why you sometimes get rust spots on cutlery in dishwashers (btw don't wash dirty car parts in it unless 'er indoors is out  )

That's why you sometimes get rust spots on cutlery in dishwashers (btw don't wash dirty car parts in it unless 'er indoors is out ) I got stung by that once - had a bike rear hub baking nicely in the oven, a couple of bearings in the freezer, and half my tool kit in the dishy, when she came home early. We had a rather expensive meal out that evening.....
