The market in the US is also somewhat skewed due to the $649Bn subsidies spent propping up the fossil fuel industry (a.k.a Molecules of Freedom rofl)

At the tail end of last year, I did a bit of blue-sky thinking and made this far-fetched prediction:

My prediction is that we will see the development of co-operating swarms of smaller (6 or 8 seat) quasi-autonomous electric vehicles which will be scattered around an area in local charging hubs. I hereby christen these things QUAVERS (QUasi-Autonomous VEhicular Resources)

When you want to go somewhere, you will summon a vehicle and specify your destination and timeframe via an Uber-style app. Regular journeys can be diaried in in advance (I want to get from my house to my office by 09:00 on weekdays, for example).

The system will then either despatch a fresh Quaver from its charging point, or divert an existing one with time to spare in its schedule and room to carry you, to come and pick you up and take you to your destination

The clever thing is that the Quavers will all be communicating with each other and will assemble themselves into physically linked articulated road trains as they share routes. This will enable power sharing, much improved aerodynamics, and much greater traffic density. They will also be able to warn each other of congestion, black spots and so on to enable dynamic re-roting to keep traffic flowing.

You won't own a Quaver, you will pay a subscription to use the service and a per-mile charge based on energy usage, traffic congestion, and environmental impact. Using a Quaver for a 5-mile journey that could easily be completed by bicycle will cost proportionately much more than a longer rural journey.

I bet this idea has already been thought about and is being worked on by loads of keen young technology whizz-kids, but just it case it hasn't I hereby donate this concept free of charge to the world as my gift to humanity smile

Needless to say, there are very clever people who are way ahead of me. Have a look at this video on Swarming Autonomous Vehicles from Warwick University

Looks like the range problem is going to be licked much earlier than expected, the Lightyear One has got a solar roof and they reckon has a range of 725Km/450 miles. It also looks like a proper futuristic car, which is nice. Built in the Netherlands, the only thing not to like is the price, projected to be €150k when deliveries start next year.

With only that much area at a disadvantageous angle to the high latitude sun, the solar roof is a pointless trinket to impress the ignorant public .

If they can make that size of roof drive a car that much further then they have invented something much more valuable than a graphene battery replacement. Those solar cells would need to be an amazing step forwards to do that? Lots of other good stuff on that though, nice job.

No where have I seen that car before. https://youtu.be/ug4Shp7tQJI?t=19

Yes, it does seem a bit strange, but they reckon it adds another 30-40km or range per day in the summer. They should know what they are doing though, it's developed by Solar Team Eindhoven who won the world solar challenge in their class every year it was held.

I'd be surprised if it was approaching that in Northern Europe with a convex roof almost designed to reduce effective area and laid flat .... on a sunny mid-summer day maybe close, but averaging over the year and weather conditions..... not a significant asset...... car looks slippery though which is probably more to the point.
