I have under the bonnet a very nice storage locker. The “under bonnet storage locker” by MMC. Beautiful and… useful?

Useful…. Not really. It’s too small to put inside tools. And being under the bonnet, you can’t reach it fast and easy. I thought, when I ordered the 3-wheeler, that it would be the ideal box to keep gloves, a scarf, googles or whatever I may use for driving the superb machine. But it happens it’s not practical at all for a “fast” use.

So, my point / question here is that I’m thinking about removing the box from under the bonnet, leaving the space free for building something capable to hold the tools’ bags I have now in the back boot. Then I’ll liberate almost the whole boot for luggage or more day-to-day stuff. I’ve seeing in many posts related to the tools to take with you in the M3W, that some of you have build this kind of plater, basket or similar recipients where you carry your tools under the bonnet. And in such a way that you avoid burns from the hot oil tank.

Please be so kind to show me what you’ve done so I have a realistic idea of how and what to do under the bonnet if I remove my storage locker.

Well I finally took my wee little box out and it sits in storage on a very top shelf in my garage.

Just putting in pad eyes to tie down anything that fits. Like a tool bag, oil can, headband flashlight,

I keep the registration paperwork in the owners manual in the boot.

I saw Jeff's aluminum "tools bin" and I guess I'll do something similar. But the surface under the Bonnet is not totally flat, as you know, because of the Front "Access plate" to the footwell. So it might be complex to build someting that really get properly fixed, no rubbing the paint, and fixing properly the tool bags. I love this kind of technical challenge!

But for sure more have different things done. More ideas ladies and gentlemen?

I finished today my front aluminum tool bin. Looks quite nice as I made it tall in the inner side with aluminum mesh.

I hope I took the measures properly and it will fit as I want to…

BMW bag is very usefull And I can put all my tools without modification

If you want some under bonnet storage that is waterproof, dustproof, makes good use of the space, doesn't involve a lot of fabrication and has storage pockets to arrange things, check out a bicycle trunk bag. This one is a Topeak MTX and looks like it is almost made to fit under the bonnet, it even tappers down at one end. It has velcro attachment straps that can be used if you want to make it easily removable.

The pipe from the oil tank is because I was changing the oil when I took the photo.

In a similar vein, I give you the Aldi fishing tackle bag:

It's a decent size and has a separate zip compartment on the base, presumably for your maggots, but which also happens to perfectly hold a Bahco 3/8" socket set. I was initally worried about its close proximity to the (hot) oil tank but I've been carrying it for five years now without incident. By the way, as far as I can recall, the tools have been used four times in those five years - three of those occasions being for issues with other people's cars!
