Converting to a decent electronic ignition system is one of the best thing you can do for a X flow, in my view.
I fitted a Lumenition years ago and have had no issues with it.
Ignition prices are ridiculously cheap on these cars, it is worth replacing plug leads and caps if they look slightly tired.
Once the carb is set and in a good condition, you are only left with the occasional oil change to worry about. I agee....the X flow is a tough little engine and apart from breathing problems which are easly rectified it was only the ignition or electrical system to the engine that was weak. A good after market electronic system will work wounders and leave you to Tinker with the rest.

I am not familiar wirh the way the Morgan breathing set up is/was, but the x/flow in the basic Ford simply relied on the Filler Cap on the Rocker Cover to do the job. Cheap copy Airfilters didnt help either. A good quality Airfilter or exchange the Airpan into an Aftermarket race one and regularly flush out the Filler Cap which had a Gauze Trap inside.

If it''s like mine, your Morgan you will probably have the crankcase breather (black box by fuel pump) which feeds gases back into the inlet manifold. You can buy a filler cap which has a hose 'take off' that you can vent to a catch tank. Haven't bothered on mine as not noticed a problem, although have bought a swanky Burton Power filler, and a posh rocker cover. ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2019/04/06/_a6DAVY3zDwj17sw8Ak1G6R5id-49-fsCkCe64H6N6mdQY97VjyjHfi0gV1L8Sd9gukciOSyHaVhdDJVlbUe2oZBCuUi--EHgySKKQciITHI-Bi-wcfeI6KQsGWw3_yMkWsxbcprjmOsCkJJNX8fikTYar6GnFkGJEQilnQKP6s_KKogjMjxwVIglPLEUk-BAF6SKm23.md.jpg) With regards to getting air into the carb, you'll probably have a Weber 32/36 DGV carb which will often already have a K&N style or equivalent, as in the picture. The smaller ones are rated for cars up to 100bhp, but you can get deeper ones for cars up 170bhp. Cost inder £100.

Reminds me of a time I navigated for a lad in a Mk1 Mexico. He liked to build his crossflow engines a little slack and so at the start of each stage, I had to jump out out of the car and tip the contents of the catch tank back into the oil tank. Car went like the clappers though. Only other crossflow problems I can think of is the standard front pulleys tend to disintegrate, fit a steel one instead Arwyn

Mine has something similar but half the depth and the element is just wire mesh. I'd like to replace that with a deeper one.

It was on the car when I got it, but it's one of these: K&N Air FilterLarge Oval - 45mm I'm just in the process of changing it to a Small Oval 83mm which should fit OK under the bonnet, and is rated for engines up to 175bhp. The one on at the moment is rated for 100bhp, which is sufficient for a standard crossflow.

Thanks for the pointer. Is the change just wishful thinking or are/have you made "improvements" Done some 'old skool' adjustments - removed fan, and switched to electric (never comes on and sits at temperature nicely at the moment) Electric FanFitted a large bore manifold and exhaust system to help her breathe out New ExhaustHave also uprated silicon leads and an electronic ignition/uprated coil ready to go on. Just want to help her breathe in a little better. There's not a huge gap between the top of the carb and the underside of the filter and thought a deeper filter would help airflow.

Sounds a bit like the route I want to take. Having read the Crossflow rebuild and tuning book it seems there is some mileage in making sure the ports aren't constricted too much by making sure gaskets don't impeed the gas flow. Means taking the manifolds off though. I can appreciate what you are/have done is non intrusive.
