How cruise ships contribute to Southampton's air pollution. New target for Greta ?

The last thing in the world I would go on tbh but they seem popular, a few of us have pointed out these stinking merchant ships whilst the easy targeted motorist is hounded into PP3dom wink what does the team think I wonder ?

I've been banging on about this for years.
A rough calculation of power demand suggests that to force the ships to shut down their generators would need a new power station.
Who pays?

I view cruise ships as little more than mobile Butlins Holiday Camps.

Right now there ought to be a lot of highly redundant cruise ships around the world. Let's hope they switch off their engines while lying idle, and that when the current virus alarm has died down we see fewer of these floating barracks/prisons - which is what the Iona looks like to me in the film at 7'29".

Not my cup of tea either, but I have many friends who love to cruise.
Can't see the attraction in any way, but I am that person who turns left when all others turn right.

Perhaps you need to be a bit of a sheep to enjoy this type of holiday. ( just a thought ).

Why is there only one monopolies commission??

Nicely put. My father did that, but then he was the rear gunner.

Wow nothing like making judgements about people!

Have you ever been on a cruise?

If not how the hell would you know whether you would enjoy it or not?

I have done 16 between 7 and 30 days.. Never to the same place twice. 4 star en suite and sea view accommodation (with no (depending on cruise) or very few kids) that moves over night with choice of 6 or 7 excellent restaurants, entertainment in theatre, piano bars, disco, ballroom, casino, spa, gym, top deck parties etc and you wake up in a new port/country.

What's not to like? Oh forgot- Cannot take your Morgan.

Still each to there own but at least try something before you categorise people as "sheep".

As always Warm regards
Ian

PS Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Talking from experience Peter?

Of Butlins or cruises?

I didnt know Butlins had camps in Alaska, Caribbean, China, Australia, South Africa, Arabian Gulf, India, Mediterranean, Panama Canal and Beyond, South America the Falkland, Cape Horn, Antarctic, Baltic Sea etc etc

That said you havn't really touched a nerve there are plenty of "never tried it" who talk the same way.

Ian

I seem to remember a thread on here a few years ago about one of Royal Caribbean's ships that had a Morgan on board as part of the ship's decorations.

As to cruising, I prefer to bareboat charter a sailing yacht, but each to his own.

Oh, and St Eve. I loved the rear gunner gag. laugh2

Giles, thanks for the acknowledgement, but it wasn't a gag. 40 operations over Europe in 1944 and 20 in Singapore in 1953, each time turning left when the rest of the crew turned right. A lonely position, or what? But back to cruises - my favourite was on a troop ship from Cyprus to Southampton. 10 days of great food and lively companionship.

I'm definitely in the 'no' camp too. A friend regularly cruises, and loves it, but it's my idea of hell. Each to their own.

If everyone went camping, the sites would be too busy and I'd hate that too....
