I’m off to make a few now

There aren’t any UK manufacturers of ventilators

They are made in China, Switzerland and Germany but we do manufacture parts

Rolls Royce apparently make oxygen supply systems for aircraft in the UK so they have been tasked with the job and can adapt quite quickly

JCB don’t think they will be able to produce in time

I bet some clever industrial designers are working on way to produce a quick and efficient ventilator from easily sourced parts

Apparently Sturmey Archer gears were used in early models

I believe the irony is that we have some companies that make parts used in them but not final assembly companies.

I would prefer that the company that makes them STILL makes them and is incentivised to do so rather than 1000 new ones come into the system assembled (with due respect for those with good intentions) as they learn on the job. A recall on a ventilator means a fixed % of other people found out the hard way. Daft.

When I heard the new boy say we will buy them from anyone at any price I nearly screamed "feckin amateur" and threw something at the telly. Given the naff professionalism involved I can only assume it was part of the pravda scare tactic and was executed in just that manner - isolate because there are not enough ventilators. Whilst it may be true it is being handled in such a clumsy manner it can only be part of an (ha ha) organised campaign. If it were truthfully like that I could only see them hiding the fact. Unless of course a sudden streak of truthfulness has dawned on this age........I still live in hope. Who am I kidding.

Breas medical make ventilators in the UK.... I doubt the Chinese can make anything we can't .....it will be down to cost ..... when the chips are down there will be plenty of domestic engineering firms can make what we need ...just not as cheap, but who will care about an extra few quid on a ventilator right now ?

I hope the government continues to back Chris Whitty’s strategy and doesn’t succumb to public panic. He’s one of the world leading experts in disease control so much so that Bill Gates gave his organisation millions in funding when he was leading the London international disease people (forgotten the exact name of the organisation)

He’s the man and we are very, very lucky to have him as the governments chief medical advisor at this time

What a lot of absolute tripe, cods wallop, bull dermot. If it wasn't so serious I would have peed myself laughing.

In order to demonstrate could somebody please get a bucket and a plastic glass with two holes in it of pretty much equal size, One represents the people who recover (but many will need additional care for some time) and the other represents the people who will die (he forgot to mention that one) , Now start pouring the water out of the bucket at an ever increasing rate. As the man says you start quaranteen when the glass is full.

Oops what has happened. The water continues to flow out of the bucket at an ever increasing rate for another 3 weeks. That is the period at which twice the number of people that have already been infected come down with the symptoms.

The very failure of this fantastical story is that COVID-19 (also being referred to as SARS-CoV-2) is not a tap. It is more like a runaway steam train that will continue to build up velocity long after the driver and the fireman have jumped and will continue until the fire burns down.

It is an absolute fantasy to think that you can slow down the spread of the virus by doing nothing.

If you think I am wrong get out a chess board and put £0.O1 in the first square £0.02 on the second £0.04 on the third etc. When you have completely filled the chess board continuing that sequence you can make a small donation to your local hospital.

I do not question your comment Stewart. He has a lot of things in his history that support him. The venue you refer to is lshtm, the london school of hygiene and tropical medicine. A venue I am familiar with and has always had a pivotal role in matters like this. He also may have been known to Malvern.

But if you put pearls in front of swine that will usually try and vagazelle them. (only look it up if you are not squeamish.)

If there is one thing that is making me angry it is that there is no co-ordination across Europe.

This evenings news (in the UK so I treat it with a high degree of scepticism in truth)
Austria - banning public meetings greater than 5 people (full on logic)
Spain - Madrid on total lockdown (well done, how's London?)
France - lets hold a contaigion event called an election vote?)
UK - hell lets just get it done with?
Italy - we are going to be responsible, yes just print this form and sign it.

I am certain we could make several jokes about regional stereotyping out of this but to be honest it just shows them all to be shabby.

If they are serious they would align, sort out the flight and travel and work as one group. Shabby.

One stand out from the stats on fatalities to me is the very high figure for Italy and the virus is claimed to have entered from Germany and their death rate is very low in comparison and yet one has to assume the virus had been in their country longer.

Has Germany taken a lot stricter and more effective measures than Italy is the question I suppose that begs an answer.
