this virus is in fact an awful lot worse than the population is being led to believe. Hence my question “are we not being told something ?”

So, Boris has spoken....
The prime minister told a Downing Street news conference the number of coronavirus cases in the UK could double every five or six days without "drastic action".
Anyone with a high temperature or a persistent cough, or anyone in the same household with them, is now being told to stay at home for 14 days.
"That means that if possible you should not go out, even to buy food or essentials, other than for exercise and in that case at a safe distance from others," Mr Johnson said.
And, in advice for everyone - even if they are not displaying symptoms - the prime minister added: "Now is the time for everyone to stop non-essential contact and to stop all non-essential travel."
Mr Johnson said measures would be escalated once again in the coming days, when those with underlying health problems would be told to isolate themselves for three months.
"By this coming weekend it will be necessary to go further and to ensure that those with the most serious health conditions are largely shielded from social contact for around 12-weeks," he added.
Shutdown by any other name, I think.

My two kids' Unis have just announced suspension of all lectures on this Weds & Fri respectively, with those students who are able to return home to do so. Lectures and tutorials will be conducted online as will Summer Examinations if the Universities do not reopen after the extended Easter break. We have offered our house in Dorset to any of our kids' overseas friends who cannot travel home. I suspect there will be more partying than studying....

Today's bulletin from the front? Official as at 17:00 16 March 2020 In Italy, since the beginning of the Coronavirus epidemic, 27,980 people have contracted the Sars-CoV-2 virus (compared to yesterday they are 3,233 for a increase of 13.1%) Of these, 2,158 have died (+349, 19.3%) and 2,749 have been cured (+414, 17.7%). 1,851 people are in intensive care (+1,779, 10.7%). Currently there are 23,073 positive subjects (the count rises to 27,980 - as mentioned above - if the count also includes the dead and healed). Taken by itself it is not good news however it does indicate that the incidence of new cases is falling. The increase in new cases over the last three days has fallen from 19.8% to 17% and now 13.1%. We can only hope that this trend continues. Unfortunately the death toll has now reached 2,158.
