The only way to cruise is on a container ship. The Memsahib and I have done a circumnavigation with 2 other people on one of these ships. It takes around 3 months and is fantastic. We have also done the banana boat from Columbia and a bulk paper carrier from Russia.
Here for a good time not a long time!!

We have also done the banana boat from Columbia..... Please tell me that they made you sing the Banana Boat song every day after breakfast. As it happens, I designed a banana boat as a 1st year project in my Ship Science degree. I shamelessly plagiarized large parts of the design of the Geestbay II. (Fun fact: Geestbay II was guilty of rescuing Richard Branson when Virgin Atlantic Challenger sank in his failed blue riband attempt) IIRC the main constraint on the number of passengers embarked was the maximum complement allowed without there being a ship's doctor.

That was a special trip John, did you enjoy it for what it was ? I forgot to tell you Richard while on that cruise I was my shy self .It was after midnight bed time and June wanted to see the photos they took of us dressed up . So I off to the reception . While waiting at the counter in swept this woman well dressed in fur and very well spoken smiled at me and told me to cheer up. I told her I was tired . She pulled me to her and planted a long kiss on my lips and the staff behind the counter looked taken back she then told me to smile gave me one huge smile and glided out of the doorway ( it never happened when i was a single lad ) . I got to our cabin told June and she was in stitches with a few taken the p remarks Not a lot you can say to that not sure if its my looks charm or cheeky grin now now no rude remarks I have the best woman in the world but sometimes I could bloody kill her when I am WORKING ON THE MOG down in the engine and she tells me to hurry up GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR . Might have helped putting your trousers on before going to reception

That must have been pretty amazing Reg. What made you think of doing something so off the beaten track if I may ask? Alistair, it all stemmed from living by the London River opposite Tilbury and watching all the ships coming and going ( this was when I was young in the '50's ) Fast forward to early retirement and the thought of a voyage came to me so we looked into it and booked a voyage from Felixstowe over to Russia via the Kiel Canal . I was even allowed to steer the ship for a while. After that success, we thought we would go the whole hog and go around the world so we contacted CGM-CMA in France and arranged a voyage starting from Tilbury and going around the world via the Panama and returning via the Suez canal. One of the other passengers wrote a book about our travels which I sometimes read again. We then booked onto a Geest boat leaving from Antwerp going to Columbia to collect the banana harvest. This would be a story on it's own but I won't bore everyone here with it. I think the world has changed a lot since then ( early '2000's ) due to terrorists etc such that many of the ships are not now taking passengers but I will always remember the things I have seen and done with immense pleasure.

Funny enough Giles, the only food we didn't get on that voyage was bananas !!!

My Grandparents used to only cruise on the merchant cargo ships in the late 60s through the 70s with some wonderful experiences. They sailed the globe and always had great service, shame those days have gone by byes.

Many or possibly most ports have closed to cruise ships illness or not.
