With all the children being sent home for the foreseeable and with parents now trying to manage any work they have been given there will be a large number of households where the realisation that the teacher wasn’t the problem will be beginning to dawn.

I accept that there are always bad apples on every cart, and some are very vocal about, but I can assure you it is business as usual here in my school and we've got a rota ready to support the children of key workers over the next few weeks. We are very down on numbers, both staff and children, but we're all pulling together - I'm currently supervising a class of 47 (although have put a film on - historic of course!) And if you think we have it easy and no idea of duty or hardship, come and spend a week or so here.....

TBM ....have teacher friends and know how hard it can be ...... controversial, but I sometimes wonder if, with many in the public services being Labour/Union ....and so many (especially the younger ones) these days seemingly unable to rein in their personal political bias/opinion ... whether media outlets can always find an angry young teacher or junior doctor they can portray as representing the whole profession for a good paper-selling headline to bash the Govt with? ..... guess the days of public servants being expressly prohibited from personal pronouncements to the press are long gone .

K I think it's the same with most of our issues - they like to find soundbites that will stir up a bit of controversy - I bet there were hundreds of teachers calling in saying they were happy to do their bit, but they chose the more 'interesting' ones to put on air. We saw the same with Brexit - again I'm sure there may have been some intelligent people wanting to leave, but they'd only interview some toothless gammon who hated brown people.....

As a retired teacher could I suggest that if you`ve not done the job yourself recently to try to support teachers who are always the whipping boy/person. I have heard that teachers are now being employed to walk around in the sewers as a cure for constipation - nobody can resist crapping on a teacher. I think it's the same with most of our issues - they like to find soundbites that will stir up a bit of controversy - I bet there were hundreds of teachers calling in saying they were happy to do their bit, but they chose the more 'interesting' ones to put on air.

Absolutely. I know a fair few teachers, none of them come even remotely close to the 'soft winging' caricature that Stewart describes.

I think most of the threads related to COVID-19 might be better on the soap box.

Yes I agree John, TBM has shown considerable restraint whilst serving on the front line

I like the comment about "number of households where the realisation that the teacher wasn’t the problem will be beginning to dawn". I think the balance has been allowed to drift a bit that way and as they attempt to come into the workplace it's going to get a furry.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I think most of the threads related to COVID-19 might be better on the soap box. There is absolutely no reason for this to be in the soapbox but I suggest that sensible people, even in the local pub, which is after all what the Malvern Arms is, refrain from making derogatory comments that may be perceived as racist, xenophobic, or aimed at any one group. Politicians of any leaning or country are, of course, fair game, with the exception of the Mayor of Mandello del Lario who is doing a great job.
