An interesting article that may shed some light on the differences between Germany and Italy. In part they attribute it to the different social behaviour of the age groups. Perhaps with the colder climate there is more of a tendency for older people to stay at home whereas the winter in Northern Italy has been particularly mild. In fact this winter is the first time I have not had to cover outside plants.

Also to be noted is that Germany is in the grips of what has been reported as a flu epidemic with a significant jump in infections from early January and a larger than average death rate. One has to ask if perhaps some of those cases should have been attributed to CV19?

Someone today suggested on Sky News that Germany does not put Coronavirus down as the cause of death on their death certificates. If true, maybe this might explain why the official numbers appear so low when compared to other countries.

But these could also be conspiracy theories. In Germany many positive cases are younger people who have brought the virus home from a skiing holiday, for example. It will change when many of the older people are caught by the virus and become positive. Not that I'm waiting for that, but I don't think Germany has a reason to hide Corona deaths. This is not an issue to improve the status or polish up the image compared to other countries. As far as I know, all Corona deaths are officially reported in this country. Even if the deceased died causally of other weaknesses and additionally tested positive for corona post mortem.
It is also not that one wants to appease the own population. On the contrary, it is a matter of concern that everyone should know how serious the situation is and that they should behave adequately. Large numbers would impress and for this reason would even be more effective in improving behaviour.

I am not entirely sure. It would be an unintended consequence of the governments lockdown to make people homeless - I am waiting to hear from the removal company. I suspect I could do one run down following the removal van - the move. But am waiting to hear.

Half my belongings are already at the new house - including my +8. I have a precious food delivery arriving there next week too - if I am not there to receive it?

Heinz. Not so much conspiracy theories as asking "Why is it so?"

I know that, just like any published source, Wikipedia can not be 100% relied on however these days it is subject to a lot of peer review and in this case, being particularly sensitive, I think any misrepresentation of the facts would be quickly edited.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_Germany

I did look at the German version, which is different, but I did take the time to wade through it to see if similar conclusions are drawn and could find no reference to supposed reasons why the death rate reported is lower in Germany.

https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19-Pandemie_in_Deutschland

It remains that either because of differences in social behaviour, or differences in testing or reporting proceedures Germany does not seem to be experiencing the same rate spread and infection of older people. The answer could be that the Italian version of the virus has mutated to be more virulent (heaven forbid!) or that the Mediterranean countries are more effected by climate and social practices.

It's a massive problem for the self-employed. With no access to the government's 80% salary replacement, the most they can get the £95 Universal Credit. That's not even enough to pay the rent, let alone buy food. If these guys can stay outside and maintain distance, then I guess that's all they can do.

Good luck, that is such bad timing as it has turned out, I can only imagine an enquiring policeman would view your journeying sympathetically.
