When the pump fails is there still a pumping sound or does it just die?

Mine threw a CEL on and off for a few miles, probably from pressure drop. Then threw a final CEL about 15 seconds before it died completely. After that the only sound was from the wind and birds chirping as I waited for a flatbed to haul me home.

I suppose that is good news since you will know it is the pump. The damned CEL tells you nothing except you need to see a dealer or have your laptop with appropriate software onboard to find out the cause. Mine has been on and off randomly since a fuel fill, which admittedly was a triple click at the pumps. New pumps at my old station were giving the 80% read on the gauge where as the old pumps gave a 100% read at one click. So I foolishly gave it three clicks and now I am stuck with the darn CEL, which as you know tells you nothing. The upside is the car works great

If there is good news, that's it - you'll definitely know it's the pump! I wish I'd kept the original dead pump assembly so I could upgrade to the Walbro fix and carry with me. I might have to buy another one and keep it with me as a backup since my new pump will probably fail me at some point.

My pump just died, no pre-warning signs just went straight to its maker. I said to myself no its not dead its just sleeping, banged it about a bit and said that's not sleeping. You know its dead because there is no pressurizing sound on start up, then of course you check the cutoff switch and if still no pressurizing sound - your dead sir.

What pump are you going to replace it with? And from where Bruce?

Same as mine, sudden cut-out at about 40 mph.

For info, if the inertia switch triggers it cuts the power to the fuel pump but everything else still works. So the first thing to do is to reset the switch (black rubber covered push button to rear right hand side of the oil tank).

Also, if the fuel pressure drops the ECU doesn't fire the sparkplugs so don't (as I did) suspect an electrical problem.....

Chris, you thought it was the regulator so you first checked the plugs?

I guess I understand why it is done that way with the ECU not allowing fuel flow when leaking, or the inertia switch cutting fuel in an accident, all probably good stuff, but why not have an idiot light for fuel pump, and oil pressure, since they have a different lamp for the brakes?

No, due to the instantaneous way it cut out I thought it may be electrical but checked the fuel pressure first by pressing the pin in the Schrader valve. A high pressure squirt of fuel came to so I then checked the inertia switch, cambelt and then the plugs which had no spark. At that point I called the recovery which took 5 weeks to get the car back to the UK from France.

I suspect that low fuel pressure would trigger the check engine light but as my engine had cut out the orange light was on anyway. It may be feasible to install a separate fuel pressure warning light but although it seems a common issue if you look at the failures per 1,000 miles it's really quite low.

In many ways it's the same as the regulator - it's likely to fail sometime and there's a known upgrade so do you wait (and maybe carry the spares) or proactively change the units when convenient.
