I'd say that if there's one pedal that's absolutely indispensable for a guitarist who mainly plays alone, it's a loop pedal. Here's Justin Sandercote explaiining what they are all about:

And the Trio+ that Nick and I use is demo'ed here, playing a slow blues which is the kind of stuff that I generally do with it:

If you've got an iPad or a Mac of any sort, you can simply record and loop a region in GarageBand. I've been doing a lot of recording for our band recently and stumbled across this use almost accidentally when I was working out a backing for a verse section in a song. You also get to see a visual representation and can adjust the region on the software. You also have a variety of in-built "drummers" or you can create your own drum parts.

As you can imagine, without being able to play with anyone else I'm using it an awful lot at the moment.

Do you think this looper would be a benefit to a bass player? The drum part sounds great, but is there a guitar accompaniment as well?

Just seen this post. I would go for a Boss Pedal they do a number of different ones which would match your needs and price, personally I use the Boss RC-1 Loop Station.

There's no guitar accompaniment on the Trio+, and so I'd recommend either the Boss RC-3 (simple) or the RC-10r (better drum machine) for use with a bass.

Fox terrier - Thanks for the tip on using looper in Garageband, it would be ideal solution. I have an ipad but struggle with GarageBand (garage anything - not good for a morgan owner). Will investigate further (maybe even look at instruction manual). Do you use speakers or phones?

Thanks again for all the looper responses. I knew I could rely on this community to come up with a number of options. Cheers, Nick
