(saying that, I've not been out the house for two weeks now, as I haven't had to make any essential journeys. However i am looking forward to my shift at work on the 20th when I can do a 50mile round trip)

Fair enough, I'm not trying to dictate to anyone how they should live within the current constraints, just explaining my thought process. If I had an essential 50 mile trip to do I'd probably feel differently too, but for 2 miles to the nearest shop it hardly seems worth it to me.

Apparently, the majority of car accidents happen within a mile of your house, so you should consider driving a longer route to get your shopping smile smile smile

To be really safe you should garage your car more than a mile from your house.

At the moment, to keep me sane, I'm working on my chop in the garden. I'm using grinders, drills, welder etc. Should I stop as I could have an accident which would tie up emergency services?

Every 90 seconds someone injures themselves on the stairs in the UK, involving up to 250,000 trips to A&E a year - should we also stop using the stairs as well? Should I stop using my heating/hotwater in case my boiler breaks and I need to call out a repair man?

Trying to reduce the strain on the NHS is important, and to be honest, I want to be as far away from a hospital as possible at the moment, but we can't stay motionless on the sofa 'Just in case'.

Remember the 'don't travel unless essential' came from the Government, based in London, where I imagine 80% of travel is done either on crowded tubes, trains or buses. Perfect breeding grounds for the virus. I don't think there's much chance of a single occupant in a car catching/spreading the virus, and the amount of traffic on the roads is dramatically reduced so one could argue that there's never been a safer time to be out..

But this is about perception in the eyes of others. Regardless of the facts of the particular situation, driving a Morgan in times like this carries the risk of being interpreted as 'some rich bloke ignoring the rules out for a jolly' by some people - especially when they see reports of people being stopped for doing a 250-mile trip ostensibly to get some bread.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be responsible for such, so the Morgan stays at home. It's only once a week to the nearest shop for essential supplies, so it's a very short trip anyway so it's not like I'm missing much.

Exactly the debate I've been having with myself since the lockdown began here. Legally I can drive the Morgan to get to a nice place to go for a walk. In practice I can walk to that place. I've been very tempted to get the Morgan out but have batted that notion down every day for three weeks now. Not sure how long I can keep this up but so far I'm still walking to get to my walk.

Here they are really clamping down on people leaving the house for anything other than an essential reason. We are allowed to take the dog out but the current ruling is to a limit of 200 metres from the house. Even that is a relaxation of the rules we were given a couple of weeks ago. A mask must be worn if leaving one's house, or private property, for any reason at all.

We have been warned that the police and carabinieri will be out in force on the Easter weekend to stop people breaking the rules.

Lots of people argue that being out in the open and keeping social distance is not a problem but in reality too many people have not been doing the correct thing so the clampdown, as always, gets applied to everyone. If someone needs to call for help in the mountains, in normal times it happens more than once every weekend, they will get the book thrown at them. Heavy fines and a possible criminal charge.

Interesting topic title!
“Excuse” hints at a justification for bending the rules?
Will the excuse be a drummed up silly reason at justification?
I will use the Morgan for our shop this week. First time on the road for a month. Direct journey 3 miles each way with no detours. Plenty of room for the shopping items needed.
I have walked to the shops last year but not carrying any bags back. The walk took an hour through open areas along the coast road. A month is the longest the car has not been driven as I set a 2 week limit to keep things moving.
I do wonder at some peoples attitude to essential journeys being extended deliberately just for the sake of driving.
There is no real difference to using the Mog over the tintop for a true essential journey.

Went the mile to do the horse this morning. Returning there was a sign "road closed". Openreach are doing some tree surgery to keep trees off their overhead cables.
The "alternative route back was 10.2 miles long.
Thanks Openreach!

Did my first NHS volunteer task today. Used the Morgan albeit with NHS sticker on windscreen and got only positive feedback from the few who were out. I enjoyed it too in the warm spring sun!
