Advice please.I have just ordered two door lock covers. Is it necessary to remove the door card completely to fit them or just as many screws as you need to gain access. Cheers paul.

It is better to remove the door card.
It is possible to fit the covers by bending the ply "card" but if you crack the card then it will never look right.

Fitted mine ok without removing the cards, they only need to be teased out a little. You will need to find a suitable piece of matching leather or be able to reuse the bit on the old ones to fill the small gap thats left.

I have fitted stainless covers to my long door Plus 4 and a previous 4/4. It is less risky to remove the door cards, you could take half the screws out and bend the card, but that does add the risk of damaging the card. With an electric screwdriver it doesn't take long to remove all the screws, be careful not to lose the dished washers as they tend to stick to the card and then leap off when you are not looking. The covers fitted directly without leaving any gaps, however, depending on what original plastic covers were fitted, the stainless steel covers may be a tad larger than the original plastic covers and the card can be a tighter fit around the new cover.

I found it easy fit the covers just removing half of the screws and bending the plyboard slightly, but of course removing all of them would be safer. A matter of how handy and careful you are. As the steel covers as Mike mentions thicker than the original plastic ones, it can be difficult re-entering the four screws that surround the cover, they simply do not appear long enough to penetrate first the dished washer, then the leather and the plyboard that has moved slightly outwards, and finally the screw hole. I solved this by first entering the screws without the dished washer. Then they enter the hole easy enough, and by tightening them gently the board is pressed tight onto the cover. Then remove just one screw, the board will stay in place. Put the dished washer back on the screw and enter it again, now it will grip threads with no problem. And so forth with the remaining screws. You have something to look forward to, the steel covers really gives the cockpit appearance a lift.

It was one of the more simple jobs on my Mog, I removed around 5-6 screws on each side and teased the plastic covers off and the replaced with the stainless ones. Easier than the stainless quarter panel protectors which I fitted at the same time.

I had mine fitted at Williams 2 years ago, I didn’t think they did remove the door cards, but in the first image it looks like it was removed slightly?

I replaced a broken plastic drivers door handle cover(second hand, apparently they're rarer than hens teeth, so look to Ebay to recoup some cost), and removed the door card entirely. Mines 17 yes old, and I wanted to polish the screw cups up; maybe a bit OCD, or "on the spectrum" as my other half likes to put it!
