I hope I'm not being overly sentimental here but I've just arrived back home after a cr*p day and seen something which made me feel a whole lot better.
I live almost next door to the village church and as I was putting the car in the garage I saw a local family putting flowers on their family grave. I know them well and since they are very much a 'service family' and have a member who is currently a major in Afghanistan I wondered if anything nasty had happened.
Turns out they were remembering a great uncle (who isn't buried in the grave but commemorated on it) and died in the D Day landings.
What I'd forgotten was that these took place 67 years ago today! It might seem funny to say it but they were having a really good time- swapping stories and generally remembering someone who's memory meant a lot to them
Cheers, G

Sorry to hear you've had a cr*p day G. As being overly sentimental - not at all. Once the pain of loss subsides, it is wonderful to be able to celebrate someone's memory with great stories.

Yes, I'd noticed it was the anniversary today and had been thinking about it. For those who haven't visited the landing beaches, I can't recommend it too highly. It makes you appreciate what a formidable undertaking it was, and how right that the memory of the participants should be kept alive. I shall certainly be raising a glass to them tonight.

That explains why the documentaries were on at the weekend.
One of those journeys that I keep saying I must do but never manage to get around to it.

We usually stop on in Normandy after Le Mans Classic Gerwyn, so have a number of recommendations of places to stop, eat, etc. Will PM you a little nearer the time.

The other nice thing about doing it will be that I can get a night ferry instead of that late afternoon boat and have a run back to South Wales the next morning rather than in the middle of the night! regards, G

Have you read much about his dad and his TT exploits? Cheers, G I must say that I was never his greatest fan when he was an active F1 commentator, his pants on fire style tended to irritate and I much preferred James Hunt's laid-back but very knowledgeable approach. However, time has altered that view and I admit the error of my ways! I thought his commentary to an empty BRDC grandstand at the end was rather poignant! I don't know anything really about his Dad's exploits, but would like to know more. Any recommendations for a good book on them G? Cheers B
