ROME (Reuters) - Deaths from the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy jumped by 474 on Saturday, against 269 the day before, the Civil Protection Agency said, posting the largest daily toll of fatalities since April 21.
The steep increase in deaths followed a long, gradual declining trend and was due largely to Lombardy, the country's worst affected region, where there were 329 deaths in the last 24 hours compared with just 88 the day before.

Many experts have advised that we are going to see this coming at us in waves....once restrictions are relaxed...there will be an uptick in cases. Of course the answer is wide scale and immediate testing. We, here in America, have yet to sort that out. It is indeed tragic.

I am afraid that people in our country are losing patience even though we have fewer restrictions than the countries around us. I am also afraid that Germany has not even got the first wave right due to successful postponements. It could happen that with the current easing of restrictions the big wave comes at the same time.
People believe that just because they have been home for a few weeks they have made their "sacrifice" and it is a matter of course that it could soon return to normal. Unfortunately, this will not be the case.

Yes we are looking to top Italy and Spain in death rates I fear and it appears to have been handled badly, here is todays WHO Situation Report This report is based on information received at 1000hrs today so the recent Italy count does not appear.

Despite these high death rates the public still seem to think they are making a great sacrifice staying at home and are now flaunting the rules more often and I think there is a big second sting on the way in our country to come shortly.

Today's bulletin. Numbers infected continue to fall steadilly. Unfortunately the number deceased has jumped up again.

I will publish something on Monday about relaxation of the lockdown.

Covid-19 - Data 2 May, 6 p.m.
There are 209,328 total cases since the beginning of the pandemic:

100,704 people currently positive
28,710 deceased
79,914 healed

Variations from the previous bulletin:

+1,900 new positive cases
+ 474 deceased
+ 1,665 healed
Among the 100,704 currently positive (-239):

81,808 are in home seclusion (+12)
17,357 hospitalized with symptoms (-212)
1,539 in intensive care (-39)
There were 2,108,837 (+55,412) swabs carried out.

If people were told

"You can go for a swim but we need to warn you the beach was mined. We think we have cleared all the mines on the marked path but there may be some left so we recommend that, if you decide to go for a swim, you keep a bit of distance from other people because if they step on a mine they might take you with them. Oh, and just in case we recommend you wear a flack jacket because we don't know how far the shrapnel travels. Oh, and we nearly forgot to mention that every so often there's some crazy doing target practice from one end of the beach. "

" Now off you go. Have a nice swim."

I wonder how many would say "Aw, to hell with this, I'm off for a swim."

If you need to swim to provide food and pay your bill's for your family. Then there will be quite a few swimmers.

We are hearing quite a lot on viruses lately and I was reading that although they stretch back to the origins of life, they are not really alive as they are simply a protein shell containing genetic material (RNA or DNA) that need living cells to replicate.

Then I was thinking what is the point of viruses? Why do they need to replicate themselves if they are not alive?

But the other day, I was reading a Richard Dawkins book from the 90’s ‘Climbing Mount Improbable’ where at the end of the book he had a chapter on this subject and the only answer seems to be ‘REPLICATE ME’

And that’s all there is to it.

I just woke up in the middle of the night...

Perhaps it is also an interesting question whether viruses existed before there were cells. Probably not, or they came to earth with another meteorite and waited until "life" in the form of cells and later bacteria arrived here, or at least its conditions if one assumes that the game between the two "forms of existence" has already been played together longer than on earth.

Viruses seem to me so different from "life". But in the sense of the theory of evolution and economy they are even more effective, even if they always remain only viruses.
And there are joint ventures. It is known that about 8 % of our DNA is ancient viruses, and in the meantime they take over important tasks of our vegetative and hormonal regulations. A rule of thumb says that the older viruses are, the more indispensable they are for us because they have come to terms with their host, or else it would have killed them. And the newer they are, the more threatening they are to the life of the host because their strategy is more aggressive while they can still kill. but they're multiplying more rapidly in this case.
