Can there be a petrol head out there who would not like to own a Ferrari at some time in their life...and at circa £34k..?

I have copied a few links below from a You Tuber who`s style I rather like in that he does not seem prone to much of the hype around the classic car market, but none the less seems very keen on classics of all sorts. Knowing there are those like me who may also be a bit of a CARsonova I thought you might find interest in the content.

My issue with modern sports cars seems to match his thinking in some way in that I discovered I was far more comfortable having my senses tingled on the Queens Highway at less than supersonic speeds, and more so as I age... though I will avoid the temptation to ramble on any further as is my habit.

Thanks for sharing, George, a nice series of clips in this lockdown time. I always liked the 308, as it was the „modern“ Magnum Ferrari when I was a teen. I also would like to drive one for an afternoon to have the experience.

I agree about the you tube videos, he is a real car enthusiast. My late wife and I owned a 308 GTS QV in the mid 90's ( the model after this with fuel injection ) It was fantastic to drive, I will always remember the gearbox and general 'chuckability' the service costs were significant but if I was to own one again I would not worry about maintaining the 'full service history' and do more work myself. Ferrari's of this age do rot and there is pressure to keep them looking immaculate. In my experience there are a lot of Ferrari owners who buy them as status symbols and are the absolute opposite to Morgan owners. We owned it for aprox 4 yrs 30k miles and sold it for the same price as we brought it - cannot complain.

My view of ownership has been tainted having known a couple of owners that have had a pretty miserable period of owning them and arrived at the decision they were great to look at but best left in the garage.

They subsequently came into Morgan ownership, one an Aero and the other a Classic Plus 8.

Got to smile at the idea of Morgan owners talking about poor Ferrari reliability. With all the moans you see on here. It really is nonsense

Basic mechanical reliability is good - better for example than the water cooled 911 which suffer from intermediate shafts issues amongst others. Engines are tough and it was often said that with Ferrari you bought an engine and they threw in a car body. Body wise until Luca brought in the all aluminium construction, they suffered rot in the same way that an Alfa or indeed almost all other cars of that era ( bar Volvo and Merc) did. Parts prices are mixed with many at Ford levels and others at exotic car levels so its the luck of the draw.. Electronics are not Japanese and in the early cases are flakey. .

On the early non electronic cars like the 308, service is a similar cost to other cars plus any parts and can be done by your local garage.Cam belts need regular change but then the engine does rev to 8500. On the electronic cars, you need a specialist simply for the computer software so you are looking at £1000 for a regular service and maybe £350 more every 3 years for the cam belt. In a few cases at around the early 90s there were models like the 355 and the Testarossa that needed engine removal every three years to do the cam belts. True the cars were designed for that - the engine came out with the rear suspension and box attached so you wheeled them around but nevertheless the cam belt service at a dealer of a Tetsarossa ( flat 12) would likely cost £5k. In general though ,and in my experience service isnt much more than an Audi sports car .

The owners club is very much like this forum full of mature petrolheads / enthusiasts. Very few of the loads-a-money city dealers seem to join hough it has to be said that there are a some who are clearly quite wealthy.

My car is 17 years old, done 18k miles worth maybe £80k on a good day. Its 400 bhp, 1.3t mid engined V8. Would I prefer it to an Aero - every day of the week I would, but for the quality of design and engineering not the badge. But then thats a personal choice.

Howard, I was waiting for that...(-: Given I was amongst the first to log on to the MSCCDG when it came into being in the 90`s in search of an insight to Morgan ownership, was on that DG till it`s demise, then on eMog till it`s demise and then on to NBC.... Thus spent years and years of reading of the many "foibles" built into Morgans and the issues suffered by their owners from new and out of the box through to the early 4-4 thus it seems perhaps a case of folk in glass houses throwing stones...all be it in fun...(-:

The first Ferrari I saw in real life was a then new Dino, I was IMPRESSED INDEED, though some said it was not a real Ferrari as it did not have 12 cylinders and thus did not carry the Ferrari badge..(?) A pal of mine once owned Mick Jagger's 400i I worked on it a bit trying to resolve electrical issues... YEAH, wonderful engine, configured as two sixes, each bank with it`s own dizzy and injection systems, got it running on all 12..WHAT AN ENGINE..!!!! Bodywork, was the quality of a Morris Marina in the bad years...!

I think the chap did well to get that car for circa £34k... it has wonderful lines but.... when younger, for sure, though today, the Morgan seems more fitting.

As for the resentment, I had more than enough of that in my 911, not so bad in my black one, though when I swapped it for a guards red one... Yeah waiting forever at junctions.. My good lady drove it too and was at traffic lights as was her brother in his car facing opposite each other having not noticed each other, until one of his passengers commented... "look at that rich B*tch in her Porsche.... BIG mistake..!!

Fortunately I have never suffered envy of any kind for anything.
