Not driven the Morgan but I did have a year driving an F type Jag with the ZF 8 speeder. Its a very competent gearbox and the changes are fast but you find yourself leaving it in auto because it works so well. The flappy paddles are fine but the difficulty is that the box has too many gears so that at any one time you could probably be in any one of three. You are never sure w=ithout looking which gear you are in and often you need to change by two gears to make much difference.

The old plus4 had 4 gears originally. Why does the new one with a turbo need 8?

Guessing it'll be be to keep emissions as low as possible. That's what it's all about these days.

Or more likely, that's how many gears the OEM gearbox comes with.

1950's US auto box's managed with two gears. For some time in the UK the auto option offered only three. Times change though. If eight offers better performance, fuel economy and lower emissions then that's fine by me. I suppose the fully variable system offered by Daff many years ago would be the ultimate concept but didn't that employ belts and such confused2

Despite only brief drive of the similar transmission Plus Six, I agree with comments from others that after the novelty of flappy paddles has quickly worn off you probably get slicker changes leaving the we'll set up engine/transmission package to do its own thing. You still have the option of paddles for the (ageing?) boy racer traffic light grand prix of course wink

The DAF was an elastic band car with infinite ratios as the cones moved. Similar to some small motorbikes & scooters.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuously_variable_transmission

Our Scout master in Devon had a DAF. unfortunately we met at the Seminary high above the town up a very steep hill. The car simply couldn't make it up one of the routes to the top.
The other Scout master had a 2 stroke Wartburg . The DAF was more reliable (just)

I remember driving a DAF variomatic (I think it may have been rebranded as a Volvo ?) I don't know if it was just the novelty value , but I seem to remember it being quite entertaining !
