Hi All

I hope you can offer some advice.

My Aero S1 temp gauge has been flickering erratically and has now stopped working.completely.

I have disconnected the 3 spade connector block to inspect for problems, none obvious. One of the spade connectors has a current according to my light bulb circuit tester.

So next I thought I'd run the car for 10 minutes to see if the cooling fans cut in, they did not and I ran out of nerve and stopped the engine in case it overheated.

So, my first question is does the temp sensor feed signals to both the fans and the gauge (you might detect by my question that car electrics are not my specialist subject!)?

I also removed the front grille to see the temp sensor on the bottom hose meaning replacement looks like front wing off and cooling system drain, which I don't mind doing but only if its the likely culpret.

Can anyone offer any advice please,

Thanks

Ian

The wiring to the bottom hose is the electrical controlled engine thermostat

The ECU controls the fans, along with an override through the air conditioning switch
I believe the gauge sensor is discreet and tucked into the back of the drivers side cylinder head

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your reply. So are you saying that
1. Switching on the air con manually puts on the cooling fans
2. The fan run sensor and signal is completely separate to the gauge temp sensor, as this would suggest that the car may still run cool in traffic even though there is a gauge fault/gauge input or wiring signal fault

To the best of my knowledge that’s correct

I can confirm that from the S2. Regardless of the water temperature if you turn on the A/C the fans come on to drive air across the A/C condenser.

A quick update.

I just started up my S1 and put on the air con, the cooling fans did not come on - am wondering if S1 cars don't have 'manual' fan selection via aircon, or if I have a second fault

Have you checked the fuses in the main electrics box to see if the cooling fans fuse has popped.

Have you got the interior fan speed switch turned all the way up, the air con won’t work unless it is

HI Alistair/Simon

I'll check both the fan speed and fuses tomorrow and report back, thanks for all your advice so far
