Hi everyone, I have a 1996 4/4 and I am about to upgrade the plastic warning light cluster with a atainless steel version. Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade the bulbs with Led replacements and if anyone has done this cluster upgrade were there any problems. Cheers paul.

Hi,

I recently replaced the crumbling crappy Lucas plastic tile cluster with a DIY 1mm brass plate. Photo's here:

I used LEDs sourced from the interweb:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B078MFFFC1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I had to do some cutting though because the fitting holes for the LUCAS array are round an individually placed.
By cutting out a T shape into the dashboard, I also managed to rewire the bulbs much more easily.
The small emblem comes off the spare keyfob.

Cheers

Mich

Generally the only issue with converting warning lights to LED's is with the engine charge lamp, on earlier cars with such. The alternator requires an initial field current to kickstart it's output and an indicator bulb of a specific wattage (hence resistance) typically 3 watts, provides this. The much higher effective resistance of an LED would not allow sufficient current so a resistor in shunt across the LED is required to simulate, 48 ohm 3 watt works.
