Cain has got back to me and unfortunately there is nothing he can do to help although he could see why I had tried to polish out the 20 years of scratches. He suggested painting it the colour of the car which is silver in my case which might be very nice and others have suggested covering with leather, a wrap or just polishing all the turning out for a glossy look.

I'm considering these and will do something with it when I make my mind up but just live with it for the moment as a reminder that polishing isn't always a good thing!

attached is a bad picture of the type of wrap that you can buy which might work well for you.

Its something I have used for a number of jobs on various cars over the years.

It might be worth talking to your local wrap specialist..different types off engine turning effect are available

This was same material for an idea to mount a MiG clock in a previous car

Thanks for the pics. Must admit was hesitant about wrapping but if I can find something similar to current it might be the least invasive way to fix the issue. Will find a local wrap specialist after lockdown and check out patterns.

Makes sense to me. Wrap is easy to apply and easy to remove with no permanent change. If you were to ever sell, this shouldn't negatively affect the negotiaton.

Given the detail on the pattern It would be good to let them do the work unless you are practised. The alignment would be painfully obvious if it was off?

wrapping the complicated curves of the console would be tricky and probably best left to a pro.;I'm still not convinced it would look 'right' when/if completed .....

I investigated hydrographic dipping a while back as I think this would solve some of the issues with curves, etc.-

Sadly, at the time, an 'engine turned' pattern was not available.

Kevin, having re-ignited my interest in this,I have found this guy in the States who does custom graphics for dipping -

You would still need to either buy a dipping kit or (probably more realistic) supply the custom film to a local dip specialist.

As the console gets a lot of wear/abuse, the 'dip' could then be 2K lacquered to give it a bit more resilience

Still a lot cheaper than a new console (if they were even available )

I agree the film would probably affect resale value less than the alternatives and as it is removable will probably investigate that route first.

James when you say custom do you mean he could try to match the current pattern or just that he does standard patterns for custom cars?

Forget that I see they do provide custom services so have contacted them and will let you know when I hear back from them.
