First I had to remove the front number plate, which had been fixed with double sided neoprene tape. This was not easy, without bending the alloy number plate.
Then it was easy, grill and badge bar off, and have a good look.
This is what I found:

No screw in the captive nut. It was the same on the other side. I found a couple of hex headed set screws, but they wouldn't go in.
So I removed the lower mounting screws and moved everything about until I'd got the 2 screws in place, with lock washers.
The I got the lower nuts in place, and fitted nyloc nuts.
Everything lined up so I tightened it all.
The beading is now nicely nipped up between cowl and wing.

The question is " were the screws ever there, or were they forgotten when the car was being worked on or did they vibrate lose and fall out?" The answer matters not, really, the job is done and I enjoyed it.

Now I have to refit the grill, I'm thinking about taking the mesh off and spraying it black and then a cream "8", or "V8" or "+8" on it. Thoughts?

Also thinking about the best way to fit the number plate, I don't want to use sticky pads again as it is important that the number plate can be removed to easily to access the badge bar, and other bits.
So I've sprayed up some "built in washer" self tapping screws so they will not be obvious on the white plate. .

I always used to use this on the Lotus as the front plate was forever getting knocked on speed bumps ,etc. -

It is more than 'man enough' to hold the plate - and it's surprising the number of things it comes in useful for when it's to hand in the workshop..

James,

the problem with that sort of adhesive is that to remove the front grill and wings, as you know quite common in servicing an Aero, the number plate has to be removed as the 2 of the bolts that have to be accessed are behind the number plate!
My plate is pressed alloy and pulling at it to free the velcro would bend it.
Hence my wish to use screws.

Here is the trial fit.

I understand your concerns Peter but I used to use e.g. a plastic spatula (or a 12" plastic ruler ) to slide between and separate the Velcro quite easily.

Admittedly this was on perspex plates so the ally ones may not be as robust - perhaps you could put an additional alloy sheet on the back....?

P.S. Aligning the cross head screws settles my OCD....... innocent

I started this thread with an RSPB design of bird box I bodged up in old timber from a bed.
Today we discovered that great tits had moved in. They obviously appreciate a good bodge.

Also the blue tits in our other bird box have got young and here is one poking it's head out.

Fabulous,

Me and the Mrs were discussing the number of extra birds we're now getting (and going through shedloads of bird feed). We even have a circuling Red Kite which is a nice reminder of my time in Tregaron (two houses down from the Red Kite Centre)

We loved the red kits when we lived in Bucks. Here it is mainly kestrels we see and birds of prey. Yes we are feeding the 5000 too and seeing lots of birds. Our residents two families of house Martins moved back in a month ago as well.

Peter, my friend painted the number 4 to his 4/4 mesh grille. I think the number 8 would look good on yours
