Hi Colin 725,

Sorry to hear the new acquisition has a few frustrations - and all the preceding advice is a very good place to start. I'm in Richmond, so not too far from you; although mine is a +8 of similar vintage, rather than a +4, you are very welcome to head up here and I can both give you a run in mine (which I believe behaves pretty much as Morgans of that age should do) and I'm happy to passenger yours and give you my views. Alternatively, there must be close/closer +4 owners who will be happy to extend the same offer to you.

PM me if you want to fix something up!

Dave

In fairness to AW, the best remedy to 'lack of use' is 'lots of use'! They'd be unable to stick a couple of thousand mile on her to get things loosened up.

The fact that 'tightening fuel filler pipe' is mentioned on the service may suggest that the fuel smell was raised previously and they tried to rectify?

It's very cheap and easy to replace the filler tube (at least it was on my 4 seater).

AW are working at least some of the time as I've had email conversation with Phil this week. I do know that the showroom is shut.
You need to make contact with AW even if it's only to register the issues with them. They have to be given a chance to fix the car.
Cheers

I would definitely echo the thoughts of others here: Make contact with your local MSCC Centre and ask if someone would be prepared to (a) drive your car and (b) let you have a go in theirs to establish a baseline of how far adrift your car is from the norm. I'd very happily volunteer but I'm even further away from you than your dealer.

My guess is that it probably just needs a good lubing of the suspension and a good thrashing round some nice twisty roads to get everything moving again. Morgans especially don't like sitting around, the more they are used the better they get IME.

And yes, give AW a call and have a chat, it does sound like a new filler tube could be required.

Did you take it on a good test drive before purchase and have you been in any Morgans prior to ownership to gain an understanding and comparison of driving style? If so how does this drive compare now?

Worth remembering that a fuel pipe doesn’t have to be loose to cause fuel smells. I’ve had cars where the pipe looks fine but somehow allows fuel vapour to pass through the wall of the piping itself.

My old 4/4 was running rich and until I sorted couldn’t be driven roof down.

Hi so sorry to hear of your disappointment ,I bought mine 4/44 seater from AW six years ago now ,a very low mileage 1999 model which had covered just over 10K in 15yrs now on27k no problems but still remember drive home alone in the rain 240miles thinking what have I done the more I used it the better it got (8k first year)and of course I got use to Morgan ownership which is everything I hoped for.Hope it works out for you sure it will.Cheers.

I have a 94 plus 4 also bought from Allon White so likely to be very similar.
As most have advised the tyre pressure is critical, too high and the car will nod. If new tyres have been fitted it is possible that the tyre fitter will be unaware of the low pressure required ,for me it’s 22 to 24 psi,
As for the petrol smell it is very likely that the fuel line rubber connecting tube is perished, it may look ok but if you squeeze it it wlll sweat petrol, this was one of the first faults I found with my car. At this age it is likely other rubber will also require replacing, things such as grommets will often just crumble. Also check for rubber hoses that may be chafing, As it’s the Rover T16 engine it’s likely to leak oil from the rocker box gasket, not serious but messy, fortunately none of these issues are expensive, just annoying that they were not addressed by the previous owner. Stick with it, it’s absolutely worth it.
