Hi
My S1 came with the RTCC remap.
I'm not sure whether it's worth keeping or whether the standard map would be the same apart from additional performance. I have the quad exhausts.
These are my observations :-
1. Quite a flat spot midrange. 2. Ammonia smell from Cats. Perhaps working harder as a result of remap? 3. Might be affecting engine management light. 4. Engine seems to be running hot. Temp gauge fine but always seems to be overcooking under bonnet, always smell of burning something. 5. Is S1 still sub 5 with standard map?
It's possible that the remap has nothing to do with the above but would be great to get feedback.
Cheers
Phil

Normally aspirated engines are notoriously difficult to get gains from simply with a remap.
The rear quad exhausts should give you a mild gain over the restrictive stock exhausts; however, unless you get into expensive internal engine modifications, I am less inclined to believe you'll see vast gains from a simple NA remap.
I'd be very interested to see bhp gains on an RTCC remap proven with a before and after dyno run. I'd also be interested to hear who's remap it actually is (who created the map), if it is simply a map done by someone like DMS for the engine when it is housed in a BMW, again I'd question the benefit.
Phil, as a start, have you had the car on a rolling road? You'll soon see how close to stock quoted figures you are. If you are close, I'd be tempted to revert to stock for all the reasons you mention. You certainly aren't the first person to mention the ammonia smell post remap.

I'm assuming that I'd be looking for 286 bhp as stock? Some have reported 315 to 320 but I'm thinking that the exhaust will get you close to 300 alone.
I'm assuming the standard map on the S1 is okay? No flatspots?
Cheers
Phil

There should be no flat-spots until the rev-limiter.. the BMW V8 runs out of puff at that point.
I had a re-mapped S1 and didn't suffer any of the issues you mention. And had an independent Dyno Map for 320-330. Phil RS has the car now. He could tell you what it's like to drive!!

Phil, After reading all your posts... sounds like you need to take your car to someone who knows what they are doing and get it looked at. There is nothing more annoying/stressful than a car that has "potential" small issues that just annoy and grind you down. These Aero's are a joy to own and drive, especially if they are set-up right. P.S. I'd advocate the recommendation from Simon of Brian at Millers (but I would as it's the family business)

Hi
5. Is S1 still sub 5 with standard map?
Phil Question is..(tongue in cheek)... are you? Probably in gear torque you'll feel and benefit from the most.

Indeed! Now writing from the Isle of Skye, resting from a two-day drive in the Highlands at speed. Engine (and car) behaved superbly, from very low rpms, without any flat spot (also have the quad Librands exhaust). The rev range of this remapped engine is truly impressive: can be driven on the torque like a diesel, or at higher revs like a race engine. PS: and judging by the state of my car when I bought it (just serviced at Miller) I would have kept Miller without hesitation., but they are a few hundred miles away! The only S1 I saw and tested from RTCC was not in good condition--amongst a long list of problems to be fixed before eventual purchase, the engine was cutting out at most intersections unless blipped. There should be no flat-spots until the rev-limiter.. the BMW V8 runs out of puff at that point.

Thanks for the feedback. Did Millers do the remap?
Thanks
Phil

Possibly echoing other comments but my understanding of 'remaps' is that unless it is properly set up for the individual car there is no point having it done. Needs to be dyno'd/rolling roaded before and after and have it manipulated on-the-fly by someone who knows what they're doing.

Nick, based on my time spent with the E36 M3, I'd say you have the gist of it.
Cereal will be along to tell the whole story but, if I am not mistaken, PhilRS's Aero was set up by the racing team who supports the previous owner Olly Bryant; therefore, will have been done with some care and attention (and proven).
