Hi All
I am a new member & am trying to navigate around the forum. Please excuse me if this question has been asked before.

I am planning a trip through France & Italy. I have heard that you will be fined if your suitcase obscures the high level brake light. If so then is it easy to fit a temporary one that you can attach to the luggage strap? I am not that technical minded but happy to try any recommendations. All suggestions welcome.

Please could somebody also recommend a steel cable that is plastic coated to chain the case to the luggage rack for security

Frank 4x4 has a luggage strap version which is an elegant fix. He'll be along when he recovers from Newmarket......

Advice from a French morganer:

Take away this ugly central break light if you can (if it's the swan neck type, not the new one, in the hood)

Nobody will notice your suit case obscures it, obviously,
and no French cop knows that a mog' have to have one.

Depending how much you want to spend and if you don't want a DIY option, Steve Simmonds can sort out both of your requirements (www.simmondsshop.com)

I use Surf Board straps for securing luggage. They are steel cords covered in 'nylon' and have a lock. Got them from a surfers' shop over phone/credit card & came next day. Worth a Google.

True to form Dave - Here is my version (which is similar to the Simmonds version but home made) But I made mine first.


Working Drawing. Check the length between the top lugs on your Rack because we are on our second rack and they differ. Adjust the length accordingly. The aluminium strip is sandwiched inside the doubled old lap top strap which is stitched along the edges (sewing machine stitched).

The Lamp is a swivel lamp sourced on ebay for £8. The 'Y Splitter was made for me by M.E.S Ltd in Warwick who make the Morgan Electrical Harnesses (01926 499756) It fits in the uncoupled connector on the existing lamp and the free end is held to the wood frame by the spare wheel on a strip of Velcro. Other piece of Velcro is wrapped around the high level lamps socket (also supplied to me by M.E.S.

It gives a sense of comfort when a very large truck is right on your back end.

As said my technical ability is poor. I think I will probably go for the Steve Simmonds version.

I could not agree with Franks comments more. On my last trip to France & Italy the trucks were so close behind me that I almost thought I was driving a four seater. In the tunnels it was almost scary at times.

I am not sure if Simmonds supply the Cable Splitter Fitting(I did suggest to M.E.S. that they make contact with them).

Please do make sure and ask them as it makes life easy if it is just a plug fit into an extension lead that does not need the spare wheel to be removed to access the original coupling every time.

Thanks to your help I had progressed. Paul from MES made me the Y Splitter. I managed to fit the male connector onto the cable for the new temporary high level brake light.

Today was the big day. Now for the really bad news. Being the first dry day today for a long time I went to get my car to bring it home. I was already to fit the Y Splitter only to find that my 1998 car has different connectors. I am sick as the proverbial parrot!

Back to the drawing board.

It appears that these bullit connectors do not have the same flexibility as the econoseal connectors. They can't be pulled apart & clicked back into place.

Open to any suggestions, Lol

If you want to sell on your splitter and connector I would be interested. The plug and soccket solution I used on my +4 will not work on the new Roadster due to lack of space. The Y splitter will work for me. PM me if you want to do a deal.
