My local sailing club, about 50 members, not all who sail, has just claimed £10,000 yes Ten thousand pounds under some misguided Government scheme. Not to be paid back, took about 1 week and 1 form to fill in. Why should the club claim for people to indulge in a hobby / pastime. Have also been told the local Golf club has also got a handout. Will probably have to resign from the sailing club as can't support the idea of getting a free handout when so many people and charities are struggling. My suggestion of giving to the local food bank met with silence What do you think. David

For me it would depend on what the grant was supposed to cover. I've been hearing about a local hardresser's who are allegedly furloughing people who were not on their staff before the lockdown. How could that work? Surely there's some sort of checking going on? On the other hand I just read about someone who has only lost 20% of their income but cannot claim just that, she has to take the full 80% or nothing...... Nick

It seems disgraceful to me that people are prepared to rip off their fellow tax-payers in such ways. We're in a bit of a crisis at the moment and we can't expect all the Government's initiatives to be fully worked through and bug-free. To deliberately exploit loopholes just to get hold of some 'free' money is pretty shoddy behaviour.

Thanks for posting a very interesting situation. Sadly David there will always be givers and takers and in my experience those with most will take advantage of such offers where as you want to do the right thing and were met with a wall of silence, these situations can be quite an eye opener to the real character behind the social "façade" sometimes. The fact that this ludicrous claim will be borne by every tax payer somehow conveniently slips their minds. p.s. Howard will have his claim in to keep his prancing horse going

Devils Advocate mode engaged!
Is the club a business? does it have operating costs to fulfill? to survive? if so, why is it any different to any other business?

The club is not a business, doesn't employ anyone and has money in the Bank, overheads are minimal. Every year when people have often packed up sailing they have often donated their boats to the club. Two or three of us prepare them and sell them. No reason for them to want money. David
