An interesting couple of cruise liners which we noticed in the bay this week and they look like sister ships Carnival Magic and Carnival Valor the company presently owes £4.4Bn and is selling off 6 of it's ships - the first of many such sales I imagine. They are the blue vessels on the map if you mouse over them the names are revealed. i have just noticed Carnival Breeze is just off Portland on the AIS plot. Full story

Thanks for this Richard. 4 more Carnival / Carnival Subsidiary ships in Weymouth (Arcadia, Aurora, Ventura and Carnival Breeze). That article on Carnival finances is interesting. My brother has an interest - he works for Plymouth Marine Laboratory in their Ballast Water Centre - a lot of their work is testing of ballast treatment systems in cruise ships. Norwegian Cruise line has secured $2.2bn in funding to see it through. There will be casualties.

That's interesting Paul I had only looked for the answer to the two in the bay, it looks like they are stopping over wherever there is a safe anchorage.
Thanks for the the link I'll bet that's a challenging job your brother has there knowing some of the national traits of the operators.
The bottom line of this episode sadly will be big job losses for a lot of the crew whom I suspect have families back home in the sticks who are totally reliant on them.

I agree. And the sad thing is that most of the people who will lose their jobs will be people with little left to lose.

I think there will be lots of people lose their jobs over the next few months and not just on cruise ships. I agree with you though the consequences for some of the crew will be far worse.

Yes I heard that on the news. Very sad for these people from third world countries as generally they support big families back home.

This is a sad tale. The better cruise lines have been using their own ships to repatriate their crews.

Not my cup of tea either, but I have many friends who love to cruise. Can't see the attraction in any way, but I am that person who turns left when all others turn right.
Perhaps you need to be a bit of a sheep to enjoy this type of holiday. ( just a thought ). I suppose that makes you a goat? And where do you goats go on holiday?
