Hi,
Silly question perhaps, but I am not much of a mechanic. My car, +8 -98 4,6L engine, has developed an oil leak. I have investigated a bit and it looks like it comes from the rear end of the oil sump. Now, I guess that the soulution is to remove the oil sump and replace the gasket.
Is it better to buy a new gasket, or is "gasket on tube" the preferred way of doing this?
Best regards

Normally there is no gasket on these later V8s. They used a liquid gasket (tube of sealant). I have resealed mine, lasted a year or so before it started leaking again. One suggestion is to use a gasket as used on earlier engines,

I had the same problem, didn't go with the liquid gasket, installed a cork gasket. It's only been a few months but so far no leaks.

I would also go cork gasket with a smear of blue hylomar on both sides. Important thing is to tighten down evenly and not too much. You're looking more to pinch the gasket very firmly rather than squash it.

I have a drip of oil from my sump, a 97 +8, is there a part number for the gasket option or is it easily obtained from Melvyn Rutter. It sounds a great way of solving the problem Thanks Dave

I would try Rimmer Bros I suspect they would be cheaper.

I have the later 4l V8 and that has a cork gasket. I can see some oil seepage but no leak as such. I will replace it at the next oil change. Tip......there is a warning about oil changes and oil pump issues, see Gomog for details. Essentially don’t leave the engine for an extended time after draining as you then might need to prime the pump due to airlock. I have never had that problem. After the work is done check that you have oil pressure. Remember, Rover V8 ‘s do not go up to 60 psi. Around 40psi or 3 bar is normal but drops at idle. Also don’t overtighten the sump bolts. Use a new crush washer on the drain plug refit. Get everything ready in advance to minimise the time without oil. No need to rush, just be methodical.

Have look at the Rimmer web site https://rimmerbros.com/ the sump pan is at https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID009857When you lower the sump be careful to manoeuvre it carefully in order to clear the oil pickup and strainer,
